By:Artem Oleinikov

Writing Prompt

1. Copy and paste the introduction of your essay. If your instructor suggested any revisions to your introduction, please make your revisions and include in the space below.
The Bible is included in King's letter through allusion. He uses Biblical language and rhetorical strategies
to prove his point to his audience. During Dr. King's letter, "Letter from Birmingham Jail", he uses Biblical
language and rhetorical strategies such as allusion to the Bible to prove his point to his audience.

Write

2. Using what you have learned about evidence, explanation, quotations, and paraphrase, write your body paragraphs in the space below.
You will need to include at least one of each of the following:

a direct quotation introduced with a complete sentence and a colon
a direct quotation introduced with a signaling phrase and a comma
a direct quotation that is introduced and explained in one sentence
a paraphrased example

The main rhetorical strategy he uses, in my opinion, would be allusion. He uses allusion when he is using the Bible as a reference to his work and purpose. The reason he chooses to refer to the Bible is because, one the Bible is the considered "Holy" and everything in it the truth. King says his statements openly: "If I lived in a communist country today where certain principles dear to the Christian faith are suppressed, I believe I would openly advocate disobeying these anti-religious laws." He doesn't fear his punishment because he knows what's the truth and what's not. Almost everyone has read the Bible or knows at least of the stories in it, and his audience is a audience of preachers who value the Bible as a sacred piece of material that they have devoted their life to teach to other people. It says a lot in the Bible about love, which in this case King says, "We who engage in nonviolent direct action are not the creators of tension." He tries to show that they try to make peace and that we are supposed to be smaller and not start a fight and be nonviolent. Adding the allusion to the Bible in the letter really adds not only a personal connection, showing that, like them, he is a devout man of God, and it shows that if his work can be related so closely to the work done in the Bible, that to frown on his work and disapprove of his work is to disapprove and frown on the work done in the Bible. King is saying in his letter that the time given to us right now is mainly for us to do good and not start fights and arguments between each other and not let evil get in between us. King states, "Now is the time to make real the promise of democracy, and transform our pending national elegy into a creative psalm of brotherhood," which means that we are supposed to live in this world and love each other as brothers or sisters and not start fights among each other. As men of God they should see that their assumptions and actions are wrong and they should take a second look at the work Dr.King is doing.
