Fiber Optics What Are Fiber Optics? Uses of Fiber Optics They are used in telecommunication and computer networking because they are flexible and use light instead of electricity, increasing transfer speeds.
Fiber Optics are used in sensors to:
Send data from the receiving end to the processing end of remote sensors.
Measure changing frequencies of wavelengths and the time taken for light to return to the sensor. In 1840's, Daniel Collodan and Jacques Babinet demonstrated that light could be bent through water, which formed the foundations of optical fiber research. Uses Of Optical Fibers 1800s 1900s Invention of Fiber Optics Fiber Optic Communication! Alexander Gram Bell invented the Photophone in 1880, which could transmit voice signals on a beam of light. The vibrations of his voice shook a mirror, which allowed light to carry his sound waves. Fiber Optic Surgical Lamps! In 1898, David Smith patented a bent glass fiber optic rod for use in surgery because he needed a maneuverable light. Music! Fiber Optic Arrays! In the 1920's, John Logie Baird and Clarence W. Hansell patented the use of fiber optics in televisions by forming arrays(grids) of light. Need For Quality! In 1964, Dr. C.K. Kao pointed out that fiber optics should be used for communication and that a more pure substance was needed , rather than the usual glass. His demand triggered later improvements. Cameron Mackintosh Isaac Faust Modern Silica Fibers! In 1970, a research team composed of Robert Maurer, Donald Keck, and Peter Schultz, met Dr. Kao's demand and created fibers made of fused silica. This was the creation of modern fiber optics. Improvements! Because fiber optic technology is very defined, the only real improvement has been the 1970's upgrade from glass rods flexible silica fibers. Due to the improvement, they were used with NORAD, the US military computer in 1975. Two years later, they were used for the first time in public telephones in Chicago. Global Impact! Fiber Optic Cables have allowed trans-oceanic communication with fewer cables, saving money, work, and increasing speeds. Today people can communicate to others who are far away with ease. One fiber optic cable can carry 65,000x more information than a standard copper cable. Changes? Today Google Fiber Google has began to install fiber optics for everyday internet users. In the highest voted cities, fiber optic cables are run directly to their homes. The first city was Kansas City. Download speeds are able to reach 260mb/s Though fiber optics can be designed for practical uses, the costs of production limit widespread use.
