Someone that creates written work
Why you do something.
Your aim or goal.
What you want to happen.
Author's Purpose tells us the reason the author wrote the selection.
to share thoughts and feelings
Author's write to persuade, inform, express, explain or entertain.
Persuade
Inform
Entertain
means to do something for enjoyment, fun or amusement.
means to convince someone to do or believe something.
means to provide information.
The lawyer tries to persuade the jury to believe her.
Cartoons are written for entertainment.
Commercials try to persuade you to do many things: vote, buy, visit.
Take a look!

Short stories, for example?
What about movies like "Iron Man," and TV shows like "American Idol?" Take a look:
Newspapers are mostly written to inform. Think about the grading policy article we read in class. The article was informative. Some parts of newspapers also persuade and entertain. (Letters to the Editor, Retail Ads, comics)

A title can often set the tone of the passage. Reading newspaper headings is one way to practice determining the author's purpose. Read the following headlines and then select the purpose for the passage.
Other examples of informative texts include: cookbooks, textbooks, and historical accounts
Can you think of some examples of texts written to inform?
Examples of entertaining texts include: plays, poems, stories, even jokes.
Sometimes texts have more than one purpose. What is the purpose of the writting on this container?
Remember: Author's purpose is the reason why the Author wrote the selection. Authors write to persuade, inform, and entertain.

Author's Purpose tells us the reason the author wrote the selection. The author's purpose may be to persuade, entertain, express, explain or inform the audience.
Sometimes the creator of a work has more than one purpose in mind.
Take a look at the following clip. Is it to inform, persuade, express, explain or entertain?

THINK about the author's purpose for the following selections, and be ready to discuss! You have 1 minute:

1- Zorbees (towel) commercial vs. Volkswagon commercial.
How did the creator go about persuading the audience in each commercial? (The were very different).


2. "American Idol"
The show is very entertaining, but is there another reason for it? What does it mean to you?
Can you think of any stories or shows that have more than one author's purpose?

Can you think of an author's intention that would include something other than these three categories?
How could we survive without Zorbees? Were you persuaded to buy Zorbees?

Take a look at the next commercial--the persuasion method is very different.

Notice the difference in the last two commercials... both are to persuade...
