Transcript of Poe Oil and Petroleum

OIL AND PETROLEUM By Mitchell and Melissa Oil/Petroleum forms from dead organisms being squished under layers of sediment over millions of years, it takes a long time to form, this is why it is nonrenewable. NONRENEWABLE OIL REFINERIES Oil Refineries take raw crude oil and turn it into useful petrol products such as plastics, gas, road surfacing and other fuels. PROS CONS Oil is one of the most abundant energy resources

Liquid form of oil makes it easy to transport and use

Oil has high heating value burning oil releases carbon emissions

Oil drilling endangers the environment and ecosystems

Oil transportation (by ship) can lead to spills, causing environmental and ecological damage
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index USES FOR OIL IN MINNESOTA Cars/other machines: oil is refined into gas to use as car fuel

Clothing: alot of clothing has polyester in it which is made from oil

plastic: plastics are made from petroleum, we use plastic to make toys, shovels, chairs, and lots of other stuff

playgrounds and roads: aspault is made from oil/petroleum http://www.schools.ash.org.au/elanorah/oilplay.htm ECONOMIC IMPACTS Making petroleum products creates jobs

50% of Americas oil is imported

Transporting oil is a large industry ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS Because oil is imported by ships, oil spills can occur, these spills can greatly affect the ecosystems along with off shore drilling incidents like the one in the gulf. http://energyquest.ca.gov/story/chapter08.html FUTURE People are aiming to reduce the usage of oil in the United States. More and more we are switching to cleaner renewable energy sources. However since we are so dependant on oil now it may take awhile to make the change. Oil was formed more than 300 million years ago.

Oil has been used for more than 5000 years

Oil consumption is biggest in USA where daily consumption passes 19.5 million barrels.

Oil biggest producer is Saudi Arabia followed by Russia.
