Steven Sasson
Steven Sasson
First person to create a digital camera
The camera weighed 8 pounds
Recorded black and white images onto cassette
Resolution of 10,000 pixels (one hundredth of a megapixel)
The camera was a technical exercise and was not meant for production.

Sensors and Storage
Image sensors read the intensity of light, and digital memory devices store the digital image information as "RGB color space" or as "raw data".
The two main types of sensors are charge-coupled devices (CCD), in which the photocharge is shifted to a central charge-to-voltage converter, and CMOS or active pixel sensors.

History continued...
The first commercially available digital camera was the 1990 Dycam Model 1
It stored photos digitally and connects directly to a computer

Ways To Share Images
Types of Printers used in Digital Photography
1. Inkjet Printers:
Creates a digital image by propelling droplets of ink onto paper.
Most commonly used type of printers.
Range varies from expensive to inexpensive.
The copy from an inkjet printer needs a little time to dry.
Paper designed for inkjet printers is heavier than the paper used with laser printers and also more expensive.
2. Laser Printers:

It is an electrostatic digital printing process that produces high quality text and graphics by passing a laser beam.
You can print both color and monochrome images (one color images)
Laser printers are made for fast printing.
Instead of ink, laser printers use toner to print.
3. Dye Sublimation Printers:
Are the computer printers that uses heat to transfer dye on the material.
They rely on a heating process to mix dyes onto a coated paper, producing a continuous tone print.
The films are placed on the paper and heated up by the print head.
The pigments to leave the film and enter the paper where it cools re-solidifies
The prints are always dry as they come out from the printer.

Picture Editing Software

Picture editing software allows a user to change, edit or enhance digital images.
Two distinct types
- Professional photo editing software
- Beginner photo editing software

Professional Photo Editing Software
Beginner Photo Editing Software
Professional photo editing software

Expensive and difficult to master.
Programs can cost up to 3 or 4 times as much as other programs.
To acquire proficiency, you must have deep knowledge within the program.
There are 100's of tools for editing, beginner, novice and advanced difficulties.
Can retouch photo by changing colors, the file type, size of the photo, apply watermarks, erase blemishes, eliminate backgrounds.

Beginner Photo Editing Software

Unlike professional software, less expensive and easy to use.
It's possible to find free editing programs, Ex. Photoscape and Google's Picasa & Trade.
Requires very little prior computer skills to successfully manage.
Popular features of novice picture editing software are applying frames and borders.
Adobe Photoshop CS

Digital Camera World named Adobe Photoshop the best photo editing software in the world, along with many other users.
Photoshop CS6 currently costs $699 and the extended version is $999 (US currency)
It include layers with masks, transparency, text, alpha channels and spot colors, clipping paths, and duotone settings.
It can edit and compose raster images in multiple layers and supports masks, alpha composting and several color models including RGB, CMYK, Lab color space (with capital L), spot color and duotone.
It also enables vector graphics editing through its Paths, Pen tools, Shape tools, Shape Layers, Type tools, Import command, and Smart Object functions.
Free Photo Editing Software

GIMP (The GNU image manipulation program)

- First built in 1996 and been regularly updated.

- Tools used to correct colors, enhance contrast, brightness, blur an image, fix perspective problems, add special lightning effect and turn a photo into an oil painting.

Phoxo
This software was first built in 2005
PhoXo is intended to create drawings and edit pictures.
This application combines a relative ease of use with rather powerful features. But its not as easy to use as Microsoft paint.
