Approximately 90% of cases are the result of randomly occuring "de novo" mutation.

This means that the disease occurs for the first time in the person who has it. It is not passed on from parent to child.

How is CDC inherited? In most cases, CDC occurs randomly during the formation of reproductive cells or in early fetal development. It is a mutation of nature and there is no way to prevent a child from having CDC.

The portion deleted when Cri du Chat Syndrome occurs is located on the shorter arm of chromosome number 5.

CDC is not sex-linked, and because it is the deletion of a section of the chromosome, it is not recessive or dominant. Ocurrances of Cri du Chat Cri du Chat Syndrome affects an estimated 1 in 50,000 live births.

CDC can occur within all ethnicities.

It is more common in females by a 4:3 ratio. How to treat Cri du Chat
