Modern vs Tradition in the 1920s
Modern: Technology
New Technology
: radio, automobiles and mass media

This expanded the middle class

Many looked towards the future

The government put more into the economy. Many looked to become rich and famous.
Modern: Women
Women had the right to vote
39% started to get college degrees
Many women stayed in the workforce, even after the war
Many stayed in the rural area
wanted to keep to traditions of farming
were called "slower" because they focused on the past
Focused on the family life
Stayed with their religion
Women's Christian Temperance Union
Women's Organization for National Prohibition Reform (WONPR) was founded to help women and families that suffered from alcohol abuse.

some became flappers
some were able to go out, drink, smoke cigarettes, dance provocatively and date freely
Women had social freedoms

Urban Vs. Rural
- the urban areas produced as the rural areas
suffered as the crop prices dropped from the booming economy.
Religion Vs. Science
- The Scopes Trial pushed the ideology of the Adam and Eve story. It budged the religious fundamentalist t accept the evolution in biology classes.
Young Vs. Old
- The younger generation was called the lost generation because when they return from war with undiscovered psychiatric issues. They were more rebellious of the old ideas of long and modest, they were adventurous and restless. The flappers changed the idea of the modern woman and rapidly changed the society.
The Scopes Trial
A high school biology teacher, John Scopes, was charged against teaching evolution to his biology class.
William Jennings Bryan, a Traditionalist, tried against Scopes.
Bryan supported the religious beliefs.
Bryan claimed that "if evolution wins, Christianity goes."
Scopes was founded guilty and fined $100
Though the punishment was trivial , it made an impact for the modern society to develop
Klu Klux Klan
Did not approve of the 'New American' women
Thought it took away the "purity of White Womanhood,"
They physically abused woman that disobeyed they ideas
