Transcript of Albert Camus

He is a French-Algerian journalist, playwright,novelist, philosophical essayist and Noble laureate.
Born November 7, 1913 in Mondovi.
His parents were Lucien Auguste Camus, a military veteran and wine-shipping clerk, and of Catherine Helene Camus, a house-keeper and part-time factory worker.
Camus was less than a year old, his father was recalled to military service and, on October 11, 1914, died of shrapnel wounds suffered during battle in WWI.
Camus enrolled at the University of Algiers to pursue his diplome d’etudes superieures, specializing in philosophy.

Absurdism - Intentionally ridiculous or bizarre behavior or character also the belief that human beings exist in a purposeless, chaotic universe.

Existentialism - A philosophical theory or approach that emphasizes the existence of the individual person as a free and responsible agent determining their own development through acts of the will.

Anarchism - Belief in the abolition of all government and the organization of society on a voluntary, cooperative basis without recourse to force or compulsion.

He was the second youngest winner of the Nobel Prize in literature. (44 years old)
His death, famously, is marked by a morbid coincidence (planned on taking a train, but was convinced to take a car with his publisher....in his pocket was his unused train ticket)
at age 17 he was an avid soccer player until tuberculosis forced him to quit playing .
When the family attended the cinema, Camus was embarrassed at having to read the title cards aloud to them.
His nome de guerre was “Beauchard.”
Albert Camus visited the United States in 1946. While staying in New York, he visited the Central Park Zoo 20 times.
