Transcript of Graphs

What are graphs? Graphs Diagrams that show relationship between two things, usually Main Types Types of Graphs Line Graphs
Pie Chart
Bar Graph
Box and Whisker Plot Pictograph- compares data by using pictures
Histogram- form of bar graph that shows the relationship between things but, unlike a bar graph, it deals with continuous categories rather than discrete.
Scatter plots
Cosmographs- similar to pie charts; commonly used to monitor finances
Organizational Charts- show a diagram that displays overall structure
Flow Charts-shows a diagram with a starting point and ending point which usually displays a process Other Types of Graphs Pie Chart What is it? A pie chart is a circular chart divided into sectors, illustrating proportion.
The pie chart is perhaps the most widely used statistical chart in the business world and the mass media. •Do you want to compare the parts to each other or the parts to the whole? If the main purpose is to compare between the parts, use a different chart. The main purpose of the pie chart is to show part-whole relationships.
•How many parts do you have? If there are more than five to seven, use a different chart. Pie charts with lots of slices (or slices of very different size) are hard to read. Best Used With Percentages: Good Example Bad Example Line Graphs What is it? A graph that displays quantitative information Data Types Used: Specific values of data
Shows trend of data
Shows increase and decrease Bar Graphs What is it? a graph that shows horizontal or vertical bars, where the height of the bars are proportionate to the quantities
can be double or single bar Box and Whisker Plot What is it? When to Use: Good Example Bad Example Contents of a Good Graph: Title
Consistent Terms
Consistent Design Questions ? Activity We are going to count off into teams of 4 and in those teams a spokes person will be selected. The objective of the game is to read the question carefully, elaborate on the answer amongst yourselves and have the spokesperson from you team stand up before any other spokesperson and answer the question correctly. The team with the most points wins candy. Good Example Bad Example Good Example Bad Example A good, clear graph contains what? Title

Consistent Design Give 2 reasons why this graph is not a good graph:
(2pts) Title
Consistent Terms
Consistent Design When representing highly variable data across a range of sources, what type of graph is needed? Box and Whisker Plot Name at least 3 other graphs named in this presentation that were not discussed in depth: (3pts) Scatter Plot
Organizational Charts
Flow Charts Data Shown: True or False: The bars on a bar graph can be horizontal or vertical. True A pie chart is the best choice of graph to use when dealing with ____________. Percentages A cosmograph is similar to what? Pie Chart Bar graphs show _______. Amount
Frequency Identify the title and labels on this graph:
(2pts) Title: Flashlights
Labels: Voltage, Hours 25% 1. Continuous
2. Discrete Each quartile in a box and whisker plot represents what percentage? A histogram shows __________ categories and a bar graph shows ___________ categories. (2pts) Discrete Categories
Time Series Data
Uses the same data as a line graph, but is different in that it deals with the extent of something rather than the direction True or False: A bar graph cannot have double bars. False Organizational charts show a _________. Flow charts show a _________. (3pts) 1. Structure
2. Process True or False: Line graphs show quantitative data. True What is meant by "Time Series Data?" (3pts) Quantities that represent values taken over a period of time True or False: The median on a box and whisker plot is located at the 75% quartile. False
