What is a Vanitas Still-life? Vanitas paintings have objects that represent the 5 senses and include imagery that shows the impermanence of life. Vanitas comes from the Latin word meaning Vanity- excessive pride about yourself (appearance, wealth, accomplishments...) Vanitas paintings remind the viewer that Spiritual persuits are more important than material persuits. These painting were very popular in the 16th and 17th centuries, especially in the Netherlands. Can you identify which paintings are Vanitas? Identify the 5 senses and what objects are used to represent them. Vanitas Paintings teach that we should focus on the Spiritual (Faith- doing good for others...) NOT Material (Cars, clothes, money, accomplishment...)
