Becoming an elementary school teacher A teacher which she or he is qualified to teach academic grade levels between grades K-5. The teacher is also able to teach different subjects in all fields required for that grade. What is an elementary school teacher You need a high school diploma Training and Degree Requirements All states require that certified teachers at a minimum have a Bachelor’s degree. Also, some states require undergraduate credit hour for certification in specialty areas. Georgia, however, does not have any undergraduate credit hour requirements. All teachers in the public schools must be licensed (certified) by the state. Voluntary certification is available from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS).
