Commas with Two or More Coordinate Adjectives
Commas With Coordinate Adjectives
Coordinate adjectives are adjectives in a sequence or order that describe or modify the same noun. They are subordinate to any other, and they can be rearranged while still retaining the sentence's meaning.

Coordinate Adjectives
Use commas to separate two or more coordinate adjectives that describe the same noun.

Be sure never to add an extra comma between the final adjective and the noun itself.
Examples:
Harrison is a
difficult
,
stubborn
child.

Harrison is a
stubborn
,
difficult
child.
Example :

Non-coordinate adjectives do not make sense when the adjectives are reordered or when an "and" is inserted between them.
Examples:
Harrison was wearing a
blue
,
short-sleeved
,
low-collared
dress.

A
djectives arranged in a way that further describes the noun

N
umerous coordinate adjectives are separated by “and”s or a comma

N

T

Mnemonic Device- Acrostic Poem
Adjectives are said to be non-coordinate if there is an adjective that describes any following, subordinate adjective(s), AND the noun, together.
In sentences with coordinate adjectives, the word "and" is interchangeable with the comma between the last two coordinate adjectives.

Comma/And Relationship when using Coordinate Adjectives
Examples:

Harrison was wearing a
blue
,
short-sleeved
,

low-collared
dress.

Harrison is a
difficult
,

stubborn
child.

: Example

Harrison was wearing a
blue
,
short-sleeved
,
low-collared
,
dress.

This is incorrect
Do not put comma there
Harrison was wearing a
blue
,
short-sleeved
and

low-collared
dress.

Harrison is a
difficult
and

stubborn
child.

Commas are NEVER to be used between non-coordinate adjectives
Harrison eats
moldy wheat
bread for brunch.
Non-coordinate, since "moldy" describes the "wheat bread", not the "bread" alone
Harrison eats
moldy
,
wheat
bread for brunch.
Example:
It is unconventional to put a comma between two non-coordinate adjectives
Rule of thumb:
