Innovation Core Business Directional Innovation moves the organization along and opens up avenues for improvements. It helps the organization overcome discontinuities and keep a competitive advantage -- continually improving the job it is performing. Intersectional Innovation moves the organization in a completely different direction. This is often called Disruptive Innovation. Exercise: Brainstorming The more imaginative or creative your ideas, the higher your score will be. Each idea will be scored in terms of (1) how unique or different it is-how much it differs from the common use and (2) how valuable it is-either socially, artistically, economically, etc." Goal - Produce lots of unique ideas: See more: https://cooler.jhuapl.edu/blog/view/123784/brainstorming-okay-maybe-were-wrong Grab a stack of sticky notes Write one idea per sticky note Place notes on the wall Group similar/related ideas INNOVATION Pop Quiz: What are 3 examples of sustaining innovation? you don't know will work Team Dynamics is important! Appreciate the uniqueness of each member of your team! Your first idea is unlikely to be your best one. Think about wildly different perspectives How would you solve this problem if you were a {detective, teacher, doctor, trapper, assassin, dog, eagle, bug, lymph node, ...}? Don't dismiss important parts of the problem One team in this room already figured out a solution ... how did they do it? Consider WAY over-the-top solutions This is not (just) a cyber problem This is a safe-fail environment. Refine,

Observing Networking Experimenting "creativity is just connecting things" - Steve Jobs Associating “If I had 60 minutes to solve a problem and my life depended on it, I’d spend 55 minutes determining the right question to ask. Once I got the right question, I could easily answer it in 5 minutes.” - Einstein "Many ideas grow better when transplanted into another mind than the one where they sprang up." - Oliver Wendell Holmes “Negative results are just what I want. They’re just as valuable to me as positive results. I can never find the thing that does the job best until I find the ones that don’t.” Thomas A. Edison “Nothing has such power to broaden the mind as the ability to investigate systematically and truly all that comes under thy observation in life.” - Marcus Aurelius Innovators tend to be really good at at least one of these: where good ideas start: where it all comes together: The IDEO Method It's not the chance of succeeding that matters
