Military Armor and Weapons Key Features Liu Bang, a peasant leader, led a revolt in defeating the Qin Dynasty. This led to the the birth of the Han Dynasty. He was a virtuous leader. He modified the strict Legalist government and combined Confucian principles. Liu Bang lowered taxes, reducing stress on the poor. He continued to unify China. Liu Bang promoted economic growth and Confucianism, expanded China, defeated the Xiongnu, and established a civil service system. Emperor Wen of Han, Liu Heng, was the 5th emperor of the Han Dynasty. His reign brought political stability. Liu Heng presented recruitment to the civil service through examinations. Emperor Wu of Han, Han Wudi, ruled for 54 years. During his reign there was a vast territorial expansion, development of a strong and unified state, and he promoted of Confucian doctrines. Government The emperor was believed to be a role model. They were the head of the government. The emperor's overall power was absolute and unlimited. Emperors had three councilors of state, the Chancellor over the Masses, the Imperial Counselor and the Grand Commandant. Religious Beliefs Taoism is a philosophical and religious tradition that emphasizes living in harmony with the principle. Traditional forms grew over time in the figure of a number of different schools, incorporating beliefs and practices, such as, theories of the School of Naturalists. This synthesized the concepts of yin-yang and the Five Elements. Taoist schools traditionally feature respect for Laozi, immortals or ancestors, along with a variety of prophecy and exorcism rituals, and practices for achieving endurance or immortality.
Buddhism appealed the to the Chinese during the time when the Han society became unstable. Buddhism taught one that salvation comes from knowing the Four Noble Truths and following the Eightfold Path to enlightenment. Cultural and Scientific Achievements Agriculture
