Transcript of Good Character Award - Ellen DeGeneres

Ellen DeGeneres Ellen has been involved in 35 charities and foundations, one of which is called the Gentle Barn. Ellen was born on January 26 1958 in Metairie, Louisiana and attended the University of New Orleans as a communication major. Ellens desire to help others is no secret, and she does not shy away from any area of need. Standing up to bullying, supporting animals, and donating to various Cancer organizations, there is very little Ellen has not helped with, whether it be big or small. Through out all of Ellens life she demonstrated goodness and righteousness by dedicating herself and life to helping others in need.
The Gentle Barn is a home and hospital for animals that have been abused. With interactions of at risk youth (from foster homes, group homes ect.)and other animals, the abused animals will be rehabilitated. The at risk youth learn skills for interacting with people from interacting with the animals. Stand Up To Cancer is a non-profit organization/website/TV show that aims to raise money for cancer researchers and scientists to come together and reach their common goal: the cure for cancer
Created in 2005, STOMP Out Bullying™ focuses on reducing and preventing bullying, cyberbullying, sexting and other digital abuse, educating against homophobia, racism and hatred, decreasing school absenteeism, and deterring violence in schools, online and in communities across the country. The Red Cross This issue is in most concern in areas with many at risk youth. The at risk youth are brought to the gentle barn where they interact with animals to learn how to better interact with people. Where is the issue likely to be of most concern? When did the issue become evident? This issue became evident when the owner, Ellie Laks, was 7 years young. Growing up with a difficult childhood, Ellie learned the positive effects having a loving animal can have on an at risk child. Ever since then, opening The Gentle Barn has been a dream of hers. Why is this issue important? This issue is important because it gives a second chance to animals that have been and neglected, then brought back to health as well as at risk youth that interacts with the animals and learn skills to be around people, and being taught how important acceptance and equality is. How does this issue affect the lives of people? This issue affects the lives of people in a good way. At risk youth from foster homes, group homes, and mental care facilities get a second chance and learn skills that they acquire from the animals which reflects in their daily lives, making it easier to interact with people. It also affects the lives of hundreds of animals when they were abused, but then taken in and brought back to health. “My point is, life is about balance. The good and the bad. The highs and the lows. The pina and the colada.” - Ellen Degeneres “When you take risks you learn that there will be times when you succeed and there will be times when you fail, and both are equally important.” Ellen has positively affected the lives of many people.
