Reflection
What is Reflection?
One of the most important wave-like behaviors of light is reflection. It is reflected light that we see with our eyes. How light reflects off objects affects the colors we see as well.

When a wave strikes a new medium, some of the wave will bounce off the surface. How reflective the surface is will determine how much light will be reflected and how much will be absorbed or transmitted.

When light is reflected it obeys the law of reflection that is followed by waves. This means that the angle of the reflected wave of light will equal the angle of incidence of the incoming light wave.

Reflection is also used heavily in geological surveys, with various devices bouncing sound or electromagnetic waves into the ground and then waiting for them to bounce back.
Reflection occurs when a ray of light strikes an object and it bounces off. When the ray hits the object, it creates two angles, known as the
angles of reflection
and the
angles of incidence.
When dealing with reflection of light, it is SUPER important to always have a
reference point, or a normal,
as this allows one to see and measure the angles created by the ray of light and its reflecting ray. Without this normal, these two angles could not be found.
Reflection in Mirrors
If the surface is flat and smooth, the rays will then reflect in the same directions
Mirrors are widely used in instruments such as telescopes and telephoto lenses. They are useful for gathering light and forming images

Reflection and Refraction
For example: If you were looking through a window, you are using refraction because the waves are moving from air through the glass and back into air- using two mediums. But looking at yourself in the mirror you are only using one medium- the mirror. The waves are only bouncing off the mirror.

So....reflections are apart of our everyday lives! They allow us to see a variety of different and certainly important things! Could you imagine never being able to see what you look like??!!
Now, since we know that reflections constantly surround us, are they used to complete certain tasks and jobs successfully and how so??

What is a Hologram?
A hologram is a three-dimensional image formed by the interference of light beams from a laser or other coherent light source.
But...these are all optical illusions!!
By using the mirror and reflection, we can make things look bigger than it actually is.
Mirrors
- allow things to see themselves, their physical appearance
For example, this room is actually a triangle, however, by putting a mirror diagonally, it causes us to think that the room is square.
Pepper's ghost is a common illusion trick used in theater and haunted houses.
But how does this work!?!?
A viewer looking through the red rectangle sees a ghost floating next to the table.
The illusion is done by a large piece of glass, Plexiglas or plastic film situated at an angle between viewer and scene (green outline).
The glass reflects a room hidden from the viewer (left), sometimes called a "Blue Room," that is built as mirror-image of the scene.
If the mirror-image room (left) is darkened, it does not reflect well in the glass. The empty room (top) is brightly lit, making it very visible to the viewer.
This causes the "ghost" to float in the air.
This illusion is an application of both reflection and intensity of light!
Plane Mirrors
a mirror or object with a flat reflective surface
Plane mirrors create what are known as
virtual images.
These images are formed in the areas where the light being reflected from the object does not actually reach. The light does not actually go through the other side of the mirror, it only appears that light is coming from the other side to the observer/object standing in front of the mirror. In plane mirrors, this image is as far behind the mirror as the object in front of the mirror and what one sees is their true reflection!
Curved Mirrors
When the mirror or surfaced in curved, the reflected image is
no longer equal
in size, shape and distance of the object. The images created by curved mirrors are known as
real images.
These images are formed on the same side of the mirror as the original object and form where the light actually covers.


Mirrors that are curved inward are called
concave mirrors
. A
real image
formed by these mirrors is larger and farther away from the original object.
Real Life Holograms
Whether the mirror is plane or curved however, the eye-brain system cannot tell the difference between the original object and reflected image....it is an illusion!

For a
virtual image
to form, the rays must meet! These images are not seen on a screen because the light rays do no come together and can only be seen when looking through the optics.
Real images
can be seen on a screen! The light rays that originate from a point focus, come together, on the other side of the lens on the image location and therefore can be projected.
Although different, you can see either with your eye!

What we discovered...
-Once we measured the two angles created by the ray of light and its reflection, we found that they were congruent! Therefore we were able to prove that the law of reflection is true!
Reflection Holograms
Reflection holograms form images by reflecting a beam of light off the surface of the hologram.
More about Reflection Holograms
The image is stored in a thick emulsion and can be viewed in white light.
The simplest such hologram to make is the direct beam reflection hologram.
In this case the direct beam through the film serves as the reference beam.
