TKMB Collage By: Caitie Lehman Atticus Finch Scout Finch Symbol Atticus Finch is a very wise man and father of his two kids, Scout and Jem. The way he raises his children shows how wise he is and his type of personality. Atticus is mostly laid back, but when rules need to be set he will enforce them You will always find him reading a book. This love to read shows that Atticus is very smart and intellectual. He wears glasses and has dark facial features. Atticus Finch is much different than many people in Mayccomb. He is currently lawing for a black man. This is shown when Mrs. Dubose says, "Not only a Finch waiting on tables but one in the courthouse lawing for n*****s". He is judged by society for this action, but he doesn't care. This makes Atticus a non-judgemental person and sees everyone around him as equals. In this photo to the right, you see Scout Finch sporting some simple coveralls, and Atticus beside her. Scout is not wearing dressy attire by any means. Scout says," But the only time I ever heard Atticus speak sharply to anyone was when I once heard him say, "Sister, I do the best I can with them!" It had something to do with my going around in overalls." This shows that Atticus teaches them to be themselves. In the book, Scouts auntie makes a comment about how she is dressed, but she simply states to her aunty that Atticus lets her dress how she pleases. Scout Finch is a very intelligent girl (she learned to read before being schooled). She is also a tomboy, as she usually clothes herself in overalls, not dresses. Scout states, " Aunt Alexandra was fanatical on the subject of my attire.I could not possibly hope to be a lady if i wore breeches; when I said I could do nothing in a dress, she said I wasnt supposed to be doing things that required pants"-page 108. This quote shows that Scout is a tomboy. I believe that Scout likes to just have fun based on how she plays with the boys everyday. She would rather run around outside then sit indoors in a puffy pink dress being a 'lady' like her Aunt Alexandra would want. This is Atticus holding a gun. He shot a mad dog on the street to protect his family. He shot the dog without even having to take a couple minutes to aim, straight in the head. Scout and Jem then find out from Miss Maudie about Atticus's secret talents. She tells them, "...The very idea, didn't you know his nickname was Ol' One-Shot when he was a boy? Why down at the landing when he was coming up, if he shot fifteen and hit fourteen doves, he'd complain about wasting ammunition." Jem and Scout were surprised as well as fascinated to hear this from Miss Maudie. The Mockingbird The mockingbird symbolizes racism. This is because the mockingbird is innocent, and does no harm. For this it is not to be killed. Killing a mockingbird is a sin. However, for a colored individual, even when no harm is done and they are innocent, it is not considered a sin. So why is this not considered sinful? It is not because people are using prejudice attitudes and racist behaviors.
