An approach to writing any high school academic essay
Jane Schaffer Writing
Some of these you've heard before, and some you haven't.
A sentence with a subject and opinion which comes at the end of the introductory paragraph. This states the point of the entire essay.
A piece of writing that gives your thoughts about a subject. You will have four or more paragraphs: introduction, body paragraphs, and concluding paragraph.
Introduction (0r introductory paragraph)
First paragraph. Includes a thesis, usually at the end.
Body Paragraph
The middle, meaty paragraphs in your essay. It develops a point you want to make that supports the main conclusion/point in your thesis.
Concluding Paragraph
Last paragraph. It answers the question: so what? It may sum up ideas, reflect on what was said about the subject. It may also look beyond the essay. It does not include concrete detail, and is all commentary.
Terms for the body paragraphs
Topic Sentence
First sentence in the paragraph. It MUST have a SUBJECT and an OPINION that answers the prompt.
Concrete Details
Specific details form the backbone of the paragraph. These might be embedded quotations, paraphrasing, plot references (not whole plots), examples, facts, specifics, descriptions, illustrations, support, proof, evidence. You can tell it's specific if you can find it on a single page.
Your opinion or comments about something, not concrete detail. These might be insights, comments, analysis, interpretations, inferences, responses, evaluations, explication, or reflection. These CONNECT the concrete details to the topic sentence.
Concluding sentence
Last sentence in the body paragraph. This is all commentary, and gives a finished feeling to the paragraph.
Steps in Writing the Paragraph
The process of getting your ideas together (especially concrete details). Some of you like bubble clusters, spider diagrams, outlines, lists, or columns. Consider what will eventually go on your shaping pages.
Shaping the paragraph
After prewriting and before first draft: you will complete a shaping page for your paragraph with TS, three chunks, and a CS.
First/Rough Draft
First version of your essay. This should change quite a bit before you are finished.
Final Draft
Your cleaned-up, spell-checked, grammar-checked, read-outloud-to-yourself, revised, and peer-reviewed paragraph. This is your best work that you turn in to your teacher!
Peer Edits
You will peer edit your paragraphs on, or near, February 24th.
This is a great time to check for academic tone.
ONE sentence of concrete detail and two sentences of commentary. It is the smallest unit of unified thought in our essay. There are THREE CHUNKS in a PARAGRAPH.
1 part concrete detail to 2 + parts commentary.

Make your claim whether or not Odysseus is a hero, hint at the reason why
each concrete detail must be a quote from the Odyssey supporting your TS
remember, all quotes must be in context (embedded in your own sentence) and cited
Though Odysseus knows some of his men must die, he does not mention it and instead only speaks of how they can live through the challenge of the sirens, "I rather dwelt on that part of the forecast" (732).
commentary is your opinion, but, do not use "I" and phrases like "I think"
you analyze here, make your claim and connect the argument of your TS to your CD
Odysseus' inability to speak the truth is not out of consideration of his crew but out of his own selfishness.
A true hero would be honest with the men who help and trust him but Odysseus proves to be a coward.
The order of your shaping page sentences.
Or, how to turn a shaping page into a paragraph.
Literary Analysis Essay
This essay will be a literary analysis. You will analyze Odysseus' role within the Odyssey. A literary analysis essay makes a claim about literature. Your claim will be that Odysseus is a hero because _________ or Odysseus is not a hero because _________.
Your CS will wrap up the ideas the TS introduced and sum up the CM
Take out a blank sheet of paper and put everything else away.

You will take a practice test today. This is not for a grade. However, you must take this seriously. Remember testing policy:
No talking to anyone
No cheating like looking around the room, at your phone, or any other suspicious behavior
Stay quiet until told otherwise

Your TS will state whether or not you believe Odysseus is a hero and why.

You WILL NOT use the first person. I think, in my opinion, etc.

You will simply state as a fact, Odysseus is/is not a hero because...

EMBED means the quotation is in your own sentence.
"Odysseus brought his ranging mind to bear" (1020).
Odysseus is a thoughtful decision maker when he arrives home, "Odysseus brought his ranging mind to bear" (1020).

A PARENTHETICAL CITATION means you gave the line or page number in () at the end of the sentence- before the period!
For the Odyssey, give me the line numbers(s).

CMs are NOT facts from the book. You must explain how the event/description of Odysseus demonstrates his heroism (or lack of). You may answer questions like:
o How does this event, moment in time, demonstrate
Odysseus as an epic hero, or not?
o How does this interaction with other characters reveal Odysseus is or is not an epic hero?
o How does Odysseus’ own choice demonstrate his heroism, or lack thereof?
o What is heroic about this moment? Or, what is unheroic about this moment?

Conclude whether Odysseus is or is not a hero. Consider his fame and the entire story.
Do not simply say: Yeah, Odysseus is a hero.
Do: recall your analysis from your previous CM to draw a comprehensive conclusion
This must be:
Typed (no additional time in class, use II, lunch, before/after school)
Turned in, with your peer edited draft and shaping page, on March 3rd
Your paragraph should not be conversational.
No personal references: I, me, my opinion, I think
No slang: Odysseus is cool, that guys lame, stuff, things, IDK
No symbols: &, #, :)

Do: use formal tone. Academic vocabulary. Clear ideas. Effective quotations. Thoughtful analysis. DETAIL.
