LOVERS? "RuE!" "I'll let you go." "...THEY HAVE TO
HAVE A VICTOR." "The hunger games are their weapon..." the country that rose out of the ashes of a place that was once called North America….The result was Panem, a shining capitol ringed by thirteen districts…Then came the Dark Days, the uprising of the districts against the Capitol. Twelve were defeated, the thirteenth obliterated…as our yearly reminder that the Dark Days must never be repeated, it gave us the Hunger Games.” KATNISS EVERDEEN GALE HAWTHORNE PRIMROSE EVERDEEN claudius templesmith CAESAR

Left to feed not only herself, but also her younger sister and mentally-ill mother -- defying the Capitol's rules against hunting in the forbidden woods was neccessary for survival. uses the Hunger Games to crush any hope of future freedom within the districts. They make the punishment of the failed rebellion clear: : "Look how we can take your children and sacrifice them and there's nothing you can do." This fear suppresses any ideas of rebellion within the districts, keeping the citizens from ever crossing the against the all-powerful Capitol, … In punishment for the uprising, each of the twelve districts must provide one girl and one boy, called tributes, to participate…the competitors must fight to the death. The last tribute standing wins. Taking the kids from our districts, forcing them to kill one another while we watch- this is the Capitol’s way of reminding us … how little chance we would stand of surviving another rebellion. “ pg.18 pg.18 But that Is soon to change. against who? "The History of Panem, "The hunger games THE CAPTIOL From a young age, Katniss Everdeen spoke out against… “the people who rule … from the far-off city called the Capitol.” But, out of fear for her family's well being, she learned to hold her tongue, especially on her opionons about the reaping, food shortages, and the Hunger Games. The fear that kept her from speaking her mind when he was young is shared by every citizen in Panem. The fear that if the Capitol even suspects rebellion, their rath will come down on you, your family, your district-- even all of Panem. Knew katniss the best

Even though their punishment would be severe, they both are determined to escape the starvation that plaques their families like many others. The fact that they both survive through selling and trading the goods they gather though this illegal act is an even larger slap in the face to the Capitol. Reaping Day for the 74th Hunger Games came to Distict 12's City Square, and with it came Katniss's deepest fear: that, for once, she wouldn't be able to protect her younger sister Prim. For her whole life, Katniss's mission has been to protect Prim, but as soon as Prim turned 12, she was entered in the Reaping -- something even Katniss was powerless to. Even though the chances were less than slim, the one slip with 'Primrose Everdeen' scrawled across it was drawn,
and with that Prim was chosen as the female tribute to participate for District 12 in the Hunger Games. Without a second's hesitation, Katniss found a way to protect her after all. She volunteered to take her sister's place in the Games. Delicate

12 years old KATNISS REBELLED DISTRICT 12 REBELLED by volunteering to take her sister's spot as the tribute due to love rather than glory. It's stated in the novel that those who have trained for the Hunger Games (the Careers) are the usual volunteers, their motive being fame and wealth. Stepping up for a sibling like she did was a, "radical thing." Katniss's emotional response to her sister being chosen went against how the Capitol wanted the Games to be percieved. As Effie announces the reaping "winners" she uses terms like "that's the spirit of the Games", and "let's give a big round of applause to our tribute!". The Capitol works hard to disguise the games as a festivity, and Katniss's desperate and "strangled cry" out of fear for her sister-- which was broadcasted across Panem-- was Katniss's first strike. by saluting Katniss after she volunteered as the tribute. "To the ... credit of the people of District 12, not one person clapped... then almost every member of the crowd touched the three middle fingers of their left hand to their lips and holds it out ot me... It means thanks, it means admiration, it means good-bye to someone you love."By saluting Katniss for her bravery, instead of clapping, the people of District 12 are showing the Capitol that they see the Games not as a form of entertainment, but as something tragic. Once again the Capitol is bashed on national television which every citizen of Panem is required to watch. THE PIN DURING THE REBELLION the Capitol realized they needed a way to listen on the rebels conversations. Here began the Capitol's breeding of genetically altered animals they were to use as weapons. One special bird was the Jabberjay, a bird able to memorize and repeat whole conversation. JABBERJAY + MOCKINGBIRD MALE FEMALE tHE MISSION = mockingjay to infiltrate areas populated with rebels, memorize conversations, and repeat them back at the Capitol. But the rebels were smart, and began feeding them lies. No longer useful, the Capitol abandoned the bird to die off -- but they didn't. a whole new species
couldn't enunciate words
could mimic human vocal sounds
could recreate whole songs The Mockingjay species itself symbolizes a victory for the rebels over the Capitol. This bird represents how the rebels outsmarted them by using their very own creation against them. KATNISS REBELS by wearing the golden mockingjay pin from Madge as a token of her district. The mockingjay became almost the symbol of rebellion against the Capitol. Wearing something like that on the Hunger Games, was bold and didn't go unnoticed by the citizen of Panem, or the Capitol. THE MUTTATION As Peeta and Katniss made their debut at the Capitol, it was suggested, by Cinna, to hold hands as they rode the chariot in their "fiery costumes". Haymitch then described the act of holding hands as Peeta+Katniss rebelled by holding hands into the City Centre because the other tributes acted as if, "...their fellow tributes didn't exist, as if the Games had already begun."
By presenting themselves to the Capitol and the viewers as friends rather than enemies, they were rebelling against the mentality the Capitol tries to create between the tributes. Even before the Games began, Peeta and Katniss were already proving to be two tributes like none other. KATNISS REBELLED: As Katniss begin her private session with the Gamemakers, she becomes angry with the judges who seem too preoccupied with their meal to pay attention to her shooting. effie trinket escort of the district 12 tributes

made "the girl on fire" "...the perfect touch of rebellion." Katniss was furious that with her life on the line, the Gamemakers could be so self-involved as to pay more attention to the roast pig on their table. With a single arrow she demonstrated her utter lack of respect for the Gamemakers, then to finish it off, she walked out of the room without being dismissed, "in the most disrespectful manner possible." Rebellion against the very people in charge of the Hunger Games (before they even began) was a very risky move, but Katniss knew they had no right to ignore her and decided to make sure they'd never make that mistake again. During Peeta's interview with Caesar Flickerman, he confesses his love for Katniss. This angered Katniss as she thought it made her look weak, but it is then explained as a way to make Katniss "desirable", and to create a buzz about the tributes from District 12. Katniss + peeta rebelled by creating the idea to fake their love on-screen during the Hunger Games. They rebelled against the brutality of the Games, which went against the Capitol as the broadcasted brutality is the districts punishment for the uprising. Soon enough the audience was hooked on the young lovers and this led to the Capitol changing the rules regarding there only being one victor. cared for rue Throughout the Hunger Games, the Capitol expects to see the tributes kill each other without hesitation, mercy, or emotion -- that's what keeps the viewers entertained, distracting them from the cruel reality of what's taking place.
Katniss however goes against this when her bond with Rue stretches well beyond an alliance. 1st 2nd 3rd Katniss showed a conscience when she decided to warn Rue about the tracker jacker nest she was going to drop on the Careers. After discovering Rue with a spear through her stomach, and killing the tribute who had put it there, Katniss showed deep compassion and love. She felt as though it was her who was dying instead of Rue. She held Rue as she died, agreeing to sing to her as she choked back the tears. As she sings, Katniss decorates Rue's body in wildflowers as her way of sending this message to the Capitol:
" I want to... shame [the Capitol], to make them accountable, to show the Capitol that whatever they... force us to do there is a part of every tribute they can't own. That Rue and was more than a piece in their Games. And so am I." KATNISS REBELLED The Gamemakers invite the tributes to a feast that promises to supply them with something they desperatley need. In this case, something to heal Peeta’s leg. Peeta refuses to let Katniss go, but Haymitch sends her sleep syrup to drug Peeta. THRESH REBELLED after learning how deeply Katniss cared for Rue.
As if looking after Rue throughout the Games and killing the tribute who killed her had left some a debt unpaid, he let Katniss go. As she retrieves the medicine, Clove attacks her from the back, pins her down and is preparing to kill her when Thresh arrived. First he killed Clove, then he defied the Capitol. Katniss understood that Thresh doing the honourable thing meant that he was, "...breaking the rules..." by not only going against the "no mercy" policy of the Games, but by also showing the part of him that the Capitol couldn't own. KATNISS ( + peeta ) rebel leader of panem
lives in the capitol The Capitol is furious at the way Katniss manipulated them and made them look like fools in the arena. Her double-suicide attempt has left her and Peeta (but mostly her) in serious danger from the Capitol. They don't take rebellion lightly, and it's made clear by Haymitch before the ceremony begins that Katniss's only hope of escaping punishment is to claim that she was madly in love and therefore not responsible for her actions. Katniss understands if she can't keep up the act during the ceremony and the Victor Tour, the Capitol could hurt everyone she loves. "THE most dangerous part of the hunger games is about to begin." Twenty-two tributes have been killed, and only the victors, Katniss and Peeta, remain. "on the count of three.." But just as they thought the Hunger Games were over, Claudius Templesmith's voice booms in the arena announcing that the rule which allows both Katniss and Peeta to be named victors, has been revoked. "They never intended to let us both live. This has all been devised by the gamemakers to guarentee the most dramatic showdown in history." by manipulating the Gamemakers into putting the 'two victors' rule back into play. Without a victor, the whole thing would blow up in the Gamemakers' faces. They'd have failed the Capitol." It was then that Katniss realized that the only way for both of them to survive was to make it look like they were both going to kill themselves. Each taking a palm-full of nightlock berries (a poisonous berry that kills you instantly, like it did a fellow tribute) and holding them out for all of Panem to see, they put them in their mouth. Just as the berries had passed their lips (but no further), Claudius's voice filled the arena. "Stop! Stop! ... I am pleased to present the victors of the Seventy-fourth Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark!" By the end of the novel it's clear... by SUZANNE COLLINS the male tribute from d. 12
