Transcript of City Cell Analogies

City Cell Analogies Nucleus City Hall Nucleolus The nucleolus is like a copy machine because that is where ribosomal RNA is synthesized. Nuclear Envelope The nuclear envelope is like City Hall's security guards because it's a double membrane that surrounds the nucleus in an eukaryotic cell. Mitochondria Mitochondria is like an energy plant because it provides/produces useable
energy for the cell. Ribosome Chromosome Phospholipid Bilayer Golgi Apparatus Ribosomes are like workers because it's where protein is made or synthesized. The phospholipid bilayer is like a cities borders because it surrounds the cell. The golgi apparatus is like UPS because it handles all incoming lipids, proteins, and controls their export. Lysosome The lysosome is like garbage collectors because lysosomes digest excess or worn out cell parts, food particles, and invading viruses or bacteria. Endoplasmic Reticulum The endoplasmic reticulum is like a highway because they assist in the production, processing, and transport of proteins and in the production of lipids. Cytoskeleton The cytoskeleton is like underground pipes because it's like the foundation for the cell and it's made of protein. Centriole The centriole is like an underground pipe worker(s) because it forms spindle fibers which separate chromosomes during cell division. City hall is like the nucleus because it's a smaller branch of the government (and a cell is a smaller part of an organism). Highway Copy Machine City Halls Security Guards Energy Plants Blueprints UPS Garbage Collectors Underground Pipes Workers Cities Borders Underground Piper Workers The chromosome is like blueprints because it contains the information for the cell to function and to recreate itself. Rough ER deals with ribosomes and is where molecules and proteins are made. Smooth ER lacks ribosomes and deals with the metabolism of some compounds and synthesis of lipids.
