Students will be able to create compound sentences using commas and a coordinator.
Students will understand how to identify and correct a run on sentence. Option 1: Make it a compound sentence. Play matchmaker ;) What is a run on sentence? Do you get it? How to fix a run on sentence so it is accepted in grammatical and educational communities... Run-ons/fused sentences are all names given to compound sentences that are not punctuated correctly. Join the two independent clauses with one of the coordinating conjunctions (and, but, for, or, nor, so, yet), and use a comma before the connecting word. When you do not have a connecting word (or when you use a connecting word other than and, but, for, or nor, so, or yet between the two independent clauses) use a semicolon (; Incorrect: They weren't dangerous criminals they were detectives in disguise.
Correct: They weren't dangerous criminals; they were detectives in disguise.
Incorrect: I didn't know which job I wanted I was too confused to decide.
Correct: I didn't know which job I wanted, and I was too confused to decide. Complex Sentences A complex sentence has an independent clause joined by one or more dependent clauses. A complex sentence always has a subordinator such as because, if, since, after, although, or when or a relative pronoun such as that, who, or which. When a complex sentence begins with a subordinator, a comma is required at the end of the dependent clause. When the independent clause begins the sentence with subordinators in the middle, no comma is required. "You are killing me, Smalls!"
-Squints from Sandlot “I’m so scared right now. I’m just gonna to do what’s sensible, I’m gonna file for unemployment. Then, I’m gonna try to get a job at Enterprise Rent-A-Car because they got an excellent corporate structure and they give you the tools to be your own boss.”
—Brennan Huff from Step Brothers I'm sure I would be just like anyone else when the time came, but I just keep wishing I could think of a way to show them that they don't own me. If I'm gonna die, I wanna still be me. Does that make any sense?
-Peeta from Hunger Games When I'm done with Gru, he's gonna be begging for mercy!
-Vector from Despicable Me When I told you that if Gotham no longer needed Batman we could be together, I meant it. But now I'm sure the day won't come when you no longer need Batman.
-Rachel from The Dark Knight I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now, that will be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you.
-Bryan from Taken When I told you when I had to work late, I really went to go see the new Twilight movie by myself. It was so bad.
-Emily from Crazy, Stupid Love I'd never given much though to how I would die. But dying in place of someone I love, seems like a good way to go. I can't bring myself to regret the decisions that brought me face to face with death because they also brought me to Edward.
-Bella Swan from Twilight Life’s all about moments of impact and how they change our lives forever. But what if one day, you could no longer remember any of them?
-The Vow Dreams feel real while we're in them. It's only when we wake up that we realize something was actually strange.
