Creating the best WW1 diary entries
Riverley has ever seen!

What are the features?
What is a diary?
Your exciting task!!
A diary (or journal) is a book where an individual keeps a record of their events, feelings and experiences.
Can you think of any examples?
We've been reading some WW1 diaries
but there is also:

Diary of a wimpy kid
Tom Gates
Spud
Anne Frank
Samuel Pepys
Adrian Mole

Even Winston Churchill kept a diary!
In pairs, read William Bernard Whitmore's diary.

What do you think the features of diaries are?
Date
- Shows which day the diary entry is about.
First person
- Writer is writing about themselves.
Past tense
- Writer writes about what has happened.
Personal tone/Informal language
- The reader can almost hear the writer speaking.
Self-reflection
- Writer writes about their feelings, thoughts, hopes and fears.
Rhetorical question
- The writer asks questions about what is happening.
Time connectives
- First, Then, After, Following that, Finally, Eventually...
Different punctuation marks
- Used to emphasise the writer’s words.
Paragraphs
- Used when a new time, place, person or topic is written about.
