Transcript of Ancient Religions
Hinduism has no single founder.
One of the oldest (if not “the” oldest) religion still practiced.
Sacred Texts include: the Vedas and the Upanishads
Beginning of Hinduism
Hindus believe in achieving “moksha”.
It is believed that most people can not achieve “moksha” in one life time.
This is why Hindus believe in the idea of “reincarnation”.
Reincarnation is determined by one’s Karma.
To ensure a “good” Karma a Hindu must follow their “dharma” or their moral duties.
Hindus’ goal in life
Brahma, The Creator
Vishnu, The Preserver
Shiva, the Destroyer
Born in 566 b.c. in a high caste family
Wandered for years searching for answers to life.
Siddhartha Gautama: the Enlightened One
One day Gautama sat under a tree for 48 days and meditated.
After this time he discovered the reason for suffering and sorrow.
It was at this point he became Buddha.
Buddha means “Enlightened One”
After Buddha died, his followers collected his writings called the “Tripitaka” or “Three Baskets of Wisdom”.
Buddhism eventually spread to China and declined in India as Hinduism took over.
Some Buddhist centers would survive in India until the invading Muslim armies took over in the late 1100s.
