Transcript of What is art?

By Suzie Wyatt Art is not only about how it looks... TED video to summarize my views on art being about memories What is art? My thoughts... To me art has to be personal in some way and show some skill as well as being complementary to its surroundings
In other words furniture to me is way for people to express themselves in a way that can fit into our natural surroundings Pablo Reinoso's work Pablo Reinoso is Argentinian artist/designer This work is from his Spaghetti bench series Why I see this as art... This series of pieces by Pablo Reinoso are able to interact with everyday objects but they are unusual, so catch your eye
Their fluidity spreading through the world holds a deeper meaning
I believe art needs a deepr meaning such as this, and have a sense of skill plus a subtle edge to them Why this may not be seen as art.... This subtlety may not be enough for people
the idea of art being in peoples surroundings is a controversial idea
furniture does have a main purpose which is essential
this unfortunately holds back the designer and people like Pablo are held back by this purpose Art is also about the meaning behind it; for example memories
This sentimental idea is shared more amongst people today than the idea of furniture being art
people can understand it more because it is relevant to them
it could be any object, as long as it holds a meaning for someone Counter argument on art being about the meaning behind it.... art may be about the meanings about it, but this is personal, so in the art business this doesn't sell
could be art to someone because of a memory but mean nothing to someone else My definition... Art can be interpreted in many ways, but to be be art it needs to have some skill, meaning and provoke a feeling in someone "If you could say it in words, there'd be no reason to paint." - Edward Hopper
