The Matador Bullfighting The Fight Starts off very young. Usually around the age of 10 or 11
they are generally between the ages of 16 and 45
The matador must be prepared for a tough, challenging, but noble lifestyle.
Rich ($5000-$10000 per suit) Dressed in heavily embroidered silk jackets, tight pants, and a special hat called a montera. 1st Stage Corrida de terros Here comes the picador.
His job is to injure the bottom of the bulls neck with his spear in turn weakening the bull. This takes around 5-15 minutes. 2nd Stage In the second stage, barbed darts with colorful ribbons
are placed into the bulls neck by the banderillero.
These darts are not meant to weaken the bull, but rather
to aggravate the bull. There are 3 banderilleros and each
places 2 darts into the bull's neck. Suerte Del muerte In this stage, the matador salutes the president, and asks for permission to kill the bull. The matador then creates a series of passes with his red cape, in an effort to get the bull closer to their body. Once the bull has become to weak to charge, the matador will reach for his killing sword. The matador then gets in front of the bull, leans over its horns, and tries to administer the death stroke.
For a clean kill he must insert the sword between the vertebra into the bulls heart, specifically the aorta region

This manuever is referred to as "el momento

For example, a contest of some sort is depicted in a wall painting
unearthed at Knossos in Crete, dating from about 2000 BC.
It shows male and female acrobats confronting a bull, grabbing

In ROME the Moors from North Africa turned the sport into ritualistic occasions observed in connection with feast days and parades. At this point they were fighting the bulls while mounted atop highly trained horses As bullfighting developed, the men on foot, who aided the horsemen in positioning the bulls, began to draw more attention from the crowd, and the modern matador began to take form. Today the bullfight is much the same as it has been since about 1726, when Francisco Romero of Ronda, Spain, introduced the estoque (the sword) and the muleta (the small, more easily wielded worsted cape used in the last part of the fight). STAGE 1 There are 3 matadors and each must take on 2 bulls
There are 3 stages to each of the 6 fights
Before any fighting begins the three matadors are
brought in front of the crowd
They fight in order of least skilled to most skilled Stage 3 the stroke of death At the end of each round the Matador will stand in the middle of the arena
If the crowd is pleased with the matador the president will give the gift of either the tail or ear of the bull Sometimes the Matador may miss, in which case he has to try again. Killing the bull on the first or second try is considered a good day. Bullfighting can also be very dangerous... Bullfighting in Portugal is a lot different
The bull is not actually killed, it's wrestled. If a bull proves he cannot be killed,
he is rewarded withbeing spared,
and may live without ever having

Rodríguez Sánchez- famous fighters Luis Miguel Dominguín- One of Spain's most famous Matadors, his specialty was the suerte del muerte (the kill).
He was very strategic and smart in the ring. Ironically, only being 30 years old,
he was gored to death in 1947. The dictator of Spain ordered a national silence to
honor his death, where only funeral mourning's could be heard on any radio station. Dominguín enjoyed wide popularity during the 1940s and 1950s. In 1959, he and his brother-in-law, Antonio Ordóñez, engaged in a bullfighting rivalry that was chronicled by Ernest Hemingway in his book, The Dangerous Summer The Bull The type of bull used is called a Toro Bravo
