Nature vs. Nurture

What is Nature vs. Nurture?
A psychological term related to whether heredity or the environment most impacts human psychological development.

Personality
Sexuality
Nature?
Are our characteristics transmitted from our parents?

It seems easy to prove that our physical traits are inherited from our family members/genetic code.
It is undeniable that our hair, skin and eye colors come from our parents.

"You look just like your father!"
"You two must be sisters"
HOWEVER..
Nurture
still plays a role in a person's characteristics...

Ex:
Someone could be born with genes to give them a normal height, but be malnourished in childhood due to the lack of nutrition or vitamins, resulting in stunted growth and a failure to develop as expected.

Nurture?
It is all the environmental variables that impact who we are, including our early childhood experiences, how we were raised, our social relationships, and our surrounding culture.

Mental Health

How Nature and Nurture Affect It
Nature:

Genetics has been proven to be a huge factor in developing some mental health issues such as schizophrenia, bipolar and depression.

Ex:
Bipolar is 4 to 6 times more likely to develop when there is a family history.

Nurture:
Genetic factors cant be denied, however, the development is also based on environmental factors.

Ex:

Identical Twins
Share genes, however if one twin develops schizophrenia, the other twin only has a 50% chance of developing it.
Are we born this way, or do we behave according to our life experiences?

Francis Galton:

He was interested in genetics after Charles Darwin published
The Origin of the Species
in 1859.

How Nature and Nurture Affect It
