Their Relationship How They Met Many readers wonder "how did George and Lennie become friends", well George was walking along with a couple of friends , when he spotted Lennie , he thought it would be a good idea to dare Lennie to jump into a river, not knowing that Lennie was easily i George and Lennie's relationship is some what of interdependency , George is a small slender man , but Lennie is a huge powerful figure. Steinbeck’s first descriptions of George and Lennie demonstrate the fact that George is like a father figure to the shapeless faced Lennie. Lennie, despite his age, acts and speaks like a child due to mental retardation. He is always mimicking George and following him obediently.“They had walked in single file down the path, and even in the open one stayed behind the other".
