What is Heritage Tourism?
Traveling to experience the places and activities that
authentically
represent the stories and people of the past.

A
linkage
to the past, representing some sort of
inheritance
to be passed down to current and future generations both in terms of cultural traditions and physical artifacts.
Classification of Heritage Attractions
Built heritage attractions
(eg; historic townscapes, architecture, archaelogical sites, monuments, historic buildings).
Natural heritage attractions
(eg; national parks, cultural landscapes, caves, geological features).
Cultural heritage attractions
(eg; arts, crafts, festivals, traditional events).
Industrial heritage attractions
(eg; mines, factories)
Misused of Heritage Terms
The
product of modern conditions
that are attributed to, & influenced by the past.
All cultural and artistic productivity
in the past or present.
Include
elements from the natural environment
that are survivals from the past.
A major
commercial activity
loosely recognized as the heritage components.
Adopted by political extremists where heritage is used to
disguise ethnic or racial exclusivism.
The Significance of Heritage Tourism
Architectural & historic monuments are
major factor as an attractive tourist destination
for overseas visitors.
Heritage tourism
contributes to the nation's income
.
Enablement of
preserving
these heritage products.
Making people to
appreciate and value
cultural, historical & archaelogical attractions.

Scientific
Values & Significance of Heritage
Political
- reinforcing what is conserved, how heritage is told, creating a sense of loyalty to the country.

Scientific
- Educative components to heritage, also helps in identifying & measuring any changes.
Classification of Heritage Attractions
Religious sites & attractions
(eg; cathedrals, abbeys, mosques, shrines, pilgrimage routes).
Military heritage attractions
(eg; castles, battlefields, military museums).
Literary or artistic heritage attractions
(eg; houses, gardens or landscapes, associated with artists and writers).
Values & Significance of Heritage
Economic
- high value, depends on private sector as means to generate income, user-pay approach.

Social
- refers to personal & collective identity that people have with their heritage, creating a sense of place or home.
