CLONING
DEFINITION
Therapeutic cloning is used specifically to provide cells for regenerative medicine and tissue and organ transplantations.
Diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes, burn treatments, and reconstructive and cosmetic surgeries are areas that would benefit from this
technology.
TYPES
Cloning:
In biology and in nature, it is the asexual reproduction of organisms such as bacteria, insects, or plants to produce (a) genetically identical individual(s).
In biotechnology, it is the process that creates copies of DNA fragments, cells, or organisms.
Therapeutic Cloning:
The process of inserting the nucleus of a cell into an unfertilized egg that has had its own nucleus previously removed. The egg is stimulated and develops into an embryo that is genetically identical to that of the inserted nucleus. The tissue is thereby accepted instead of being rejected as foreign.
This is used specifically to provide cells for regenerative medicine and tissue and organ transplantations.
Diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes, burn treatments, and reconstructive and cosmetic surgeries are areas that would benefit from this technology.
