How does the internet affect the ability to communicate with your family and how should it be dealt with?

-E-mail, Facebook and other websites allow people to communicate with family that they are unable to see in person.
It can be used to look up information so homework or work related things can be finished faster.

It provides the ability to research things which helps with finishing work and school related items quicker and easier.
It allows online access to movies and tv shows for family viewing.
Less family bonding time because people are on the internet rather than conversing with each other.
Are there any rules in your house regarding the use of the internet?
Only appropriate websites are allowing to be viewed.
There were imposed time limits with the kids were younger but not anymore.
What advice would you give to other families about internet usage in the home?
Make sure there is still quality family time

It allows my to stay in contact with my older brother who is in college and my older sister who has graduated college and lives on her own.
I can upload/share things with relatives that I don't see that often.
It can sometime be a distraction.
Are there any rules in your house regarding the use of internet?
No there aren't any rules in my house.
What advice would you give to other families about internet usage in the home?
No facebook until at least 8th grade.
Make sure to warns kids about the dangers of the internet and what types of sites they should stay away from. In a study of 1,000 it was found that Americans aged 13 to 18 spend more than 72 hours a week using electronic media. Because teenagers are often doing more than one thing online they actually manage to pack a total of 10 hours and 45 minutes worth of media content into 7½ hours.
