As students are writing, they should be underlining words that they are not sure how to spell. This will help with the "I'm stuck on a word" and "How do you spell...?" problems. It will also speed up conferencing and new goal setting.

"Check for understanding is the workhorse of comprehension strategies. It is the one we consistently use, either consciously or unconsciously throughout our lives. It is so critical to comprehension that we teach it and revisit it during whole group and small group instruction, as well as during individual conferences. One of the places we encourage children to use this strategy is while they are Reading to Someone"

"The typical teacher has children doing a lot of 'stuff'. How is what I am having children do creating readers and writers?"
Reggie Routman
What research helps to support The Daily Five?

Since 1946, research shows that kids need to:
Read to be better readers
Write to be better writers

Reggie Routman and Richard Allington show that we are use to teaching 80% of the time and practice 20% of the time.

This should be switch to us teaching 20% of the time and students practicing 80% of the time. Similar to sports-students have to physically practice to get better!

Students develop the daily habits of reading, writing, and the ability to work independently.

Teachers deliver focused instruction based on the needs of each student, which leads to students’ achieving reading proficiency.

John Hattie
Author of
Visible Learning

John Hattie’s work is based on his meta-analysis of more than 1,000 research reviews comprising more than 50,000 studies involving more than 250 million students around the world.

Hattie found that the #1 most effective method for improving achievement was by giving students 100% visibility into what they are learning and why.

What does the Visible Learning research mean?
JOHN HATTIE’S EIGHT MIND FRAMES
MIND FRAME 1:
Teachers/leaders believe that their fundamental task is to evaluate the effect of their teaching on students’ learning and achievement.
MIND FRAME 2:
Teachers/leaders believe that success and failure in student learning are about what they, as teachers or leaders, did or did not do…We are change agents!
MIND FRAME 3:
Teachers/leaders want to talk more about the learning than the teaching.
MIND FRAME 4:
Teachers/leaders see assessment as feedback about their impact.
MIND FRAME 5:
Teachers/leaders engage in dialogue not monologue.
MIND FRAME 6:
Teachers/leaders enjoy the challenge and never retreat to “doing their best.”

MIND FRAME 7:
Teachers/leaders believe that it is their role to develop positive relationships in classroom/staff rooms.
MIND FRAME 8:
Teachers/leaders inform all about the language of learning.
“Whoever does the most work in the classroom does the most learning.”

What sets The Daily Five apart?

Providing choice
Nurturing community
Creating a sense of urgency

Barometer Children
We all have those students who dictate the "weather" in our classroom...
...Those students are called "barometer children".
There are 5 levels of support for barometer children.

CAFE
What is the CAFE menu?
CAFE is an acronym for Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expanding Vocabulary, and the system includes goal-setting with students in individual conferences, posting of goals on a whole-class board, developing small group instruction based on clusters of students with similar goals, and targeting whole-class instruction based on emerging student needs and fine tuning one on one conferring.

Math Daily 3
The essence of mathematics is not to make simple things complicated but to make complicated things simple.
Stanley Gudder
What is Math Daily 3?
How does Math Daily 3 relate to Daily 5?
Vimeo Video
Similar to Daily 5, Math Daily 3 combines the brain research of brief focus lessons with a gradual release of responsibility model.
The 3 short focus lessons often cover the same concept and focus on teaching the concept through I do, We do, You do.
"I DO"
The explicit teaching of the math concept through teacher explanation and modeling.
"WE DO"
Allows time for guided practice of the same concept taught in one lesson.
"YOU DO"
Students work on a problem that reflects the lesson focus of the day. This is done independently or with an elbow buddy. Students share their thinking and/or strategy with a partner or whole group.
