Pelagic Zone It reaches from coasts to the midle of the ocean Location Plants Phytoplankton Singled cell- require fewer nutrients Transparent-nearly visible to creatures trying wanting to eat them Penate Diatoms-capable of locomotion through a wave like motion when cytoplasmic surface is in contact with another surface Diatoms Centric Diatoms- float better than pennate diatoms, that are usually living on the shallow ocean floor or
attached to floating objects Cell Shapes- include rods, ribbons, chains, discs, spheres, and leaf-like Dinoflagellates Shells made of chiton Bioluminescent- the ability to chemically make there own light Animals
The Gulper Eel It has a large mouth and a stomach that can stretch so it can eat prey that is simailar in size Sperm Whale They have a blubber layer to help keep them warm in the frigid waters of the ocean Spermaceti oragan- Helps alters there buoyancy which allows them to dive deeper Pacific Angel Shark It has a muscle that pumps water over its gill so it is able to stay stationary and it is colored like the muddy and sandy ocean floor so it can get it's prey easier It is known to hunt in same spots in which they had success Viperfish It has a light-producing organ to help it see in the dark and lure small fish to it by turning it on and off It is very fierce so it can get food and stay alive can't go to sleep fully because it needs to be conscious to breath Fangtooth It has large teeth to help it hunt for it's food It tries to stay deeper in the water so it won't be eaten by bigger fish because it is only about 6 in. long Seaweed It has an air bladder that allows it float high in the ocean to get sunlight Garibaldi use the seaweed for covering and a nest to lay eggs Climate In the ocean it is generally cold but it is hard to give an actual temerature range because of thermal stratification with a constant mix of warm and cold currents Winds move the water by certain patterns beacause of the earths spin. Winds are able to move the top 400 meters of the ocean Surface ocean currents are gyres and they flow clockwise in the northen hemisphere and counter clockwise in the southern hemisphere This is a map of all the different ocean currents Geology The bottom of the ocean is made up of mountains, valleys, plains, plateaus, islands, ridges and volcanoes There are three different types of soil on the ocean floor calcareous ooze, red clay and siliceous ooze Calcareous Ooze- is comosed of shells of foraminifera, coccolithophores and pteropods, which are tiny living organisms on the ocean floor. It is the most common of the three. Red Clay- is made up of quartz, clay minerals and micrometeorites, which are rocks that wheigh less than a gram and fallen to Earth from outer space. It is the second most common of the three. Siliceous Ooze- is made up of plankton debris and silica shells. It is the least common of the three.
