ZOOS: A REFUGE OR A PRISON Pros (zoos are good) 1. Zoos play a major role in helping to conserve endangered species. In one year, over 4,000 conservation programs took place worldwide. 2. Zoos help educate people by providing detailed information about the animals that are in each exhibit, and zookeepers are there to inform you. http://www.utulsa.edu/collegian/article.asp?article=223 http://www.aza.org/uploadedFiles/Conservation/Commitment_and_Impacts/2009ConservationImpactReport.pdf 3. Zoos can get research that we can't get in the wild. http://www.avma.org/onlnews/javma/dec02/021201d.asp 4. Some zoos rescue injured animals so that they can be healed and returned to the wild. http://www.peta.org/issues/Animals-in-Entertainment/zoos-pitiful-prisons.aspx 5. Zoos can help animals to live longer than if they were in the wild. http://www.goodzoos.com/arezoos.htm 6. AZA standards and reports make sure zoos treat all animals well. This makes sure that owners are putting welfare in front of their own interests. http://www.idebate.org/debatabase/topic_details.php?topicID=1 7. Zoos breed animals in order to keep steady poulations in the wild. Currently 161 species are being bred and zoos are looking into more. http://www.waza.org/en/site/conservation/conservation-breeding-programmes Cons (zoos are bad) 1. People take animals from their habitats and put them into zoos weather they are endangered or not. http://www.bbc.co.uk/ethics/animals/using/entertainment_1.shtml 2. Animals feel very confined in zoos because they don't have enough space to do what they would in the wild. http://www.idebate.org/debatabase/topic_details.php?topicID=1 3. Zoos disrupt food chains by taking too many animals from a habitat. http://www.noazark.org/links/wrongly_imprisoned_by_lynne_dier.htm 4.Zoo research is about animals in captivity, so it wouldn't matter if zoos did not exist. http://www.peta.org/issues/Animals-in-Entertainment/zoos-pitiful-prisons.aspx 5. Zoo owners put money and guests over animal welfare, which is bad for the animals. http://www.zooreach.org/WAZA/2003_other_zoo_world.pdf 6. Animals can become very bored while in zoos, because they are in the same enclosures and are doing things that are signs of boredom, such as pacing. http://www.veganpeace.com/animal_cruelty/zoos.htm 7.Animals are under stress in zoos that can hurt their health. http://www.avma.org/onlnews/javma/deco2/021201g.asp http://www.avma.org/onlnews/javma/dec02/021201d.asp Thank you for watching my Prezi!
