has happened and ended in the past.

(She walked through the park.)

The preterit and the Imperfect are not interchangeable. In Spanish, the choice between these two tenses depends on the context and the point of view of the speaker.

As a general rule the imperfect tense is used to portray various aspects of the background of a story. While the preterit tense presents information as an event. Compare and Contrast Use of the Preterit 1. Express complete habitual actions in the past with time limit Ex: Don esperaba por sus hijo Javier (Don used to wait for his son Javier) Ex: Don se rompió la pierna. (Don broke his leg.) 2.
