has happened and ended in the past.

-Used when speaking of events that ended a series

-Indicates a change in an emotion/physical state in the past.

reference of time Use of the Imperfect CAR...YO form uses “que’” Ex: Sacar=Saqué-

GAR...YO form uses “gue’” Ex: Llegar=llegué-

ZAR...YO form uses “ce’” Ex: Cruzar=crucé -AR -ER/IR -é -amos

(She walked through the park.)

The preterit and the Imperfect are not interchangeable. In Spanish, the choice between these two tenses depends on the context and the point of view of the speaker.

As a general rule the imperfect tense is used to portray various aspects of the background of a story. While the preterit tense presents information as an event. Compare and Contrast Use of the Preterit 1. Express complete habitual actions in the past with time limit Ex: Don esperaba por sus hijo Javier (Don used to wait for his son Javier) Ex: Don se rompió la pierna. (Don broke his leg.) 2. Express habitual past action and events 2. Espress the beginning or end of a past actions Ex. Cuando era joven jugaba al tenis. (When I was young, I used to play tennis.) Ex. (The doctor examined my ears and wrote the prescription.) Often they appear in the same sentence. Ex. Miraba la television cuando sonó el teléfono.
(I was watching TV when they phone rang.) Ex. Silvia leía el periodico cuando llegó Alex.
