YOUR ELUSIVE CREATIVE GENIUS CREATIVITY linked with SUFFERING Writers/creative people are almost always perceived to be mentally unstable.
And most people think that because of the high death count in the 20th century. When someone wants to become a writer it is ofter greeted with questions like:
What if your work isn't ever any good? Are you ready to live with that failure?
Aren't you afraid that nothing will ever be published? Creative minds died young often because of suicide. And those who didn't commit suicide were really undone by their gifts.
Normand Mailler said "Every one of my books has killed me a little more." And it's because of that that we think artistry in the end always leads to anguish. I hate myself. This is dangerous, it's better if we encourage our great minds to live! By: Claire Varty PSYCOLOGICAL CONSTRUCT Knowing that your greatest success is behind you, could lead a person to follow exactly what society thinks of writers, depression.
We need to find a way to separate ourselves from the outcome of our work. How do we create a psychological construct to protect yourself from the result of your work? Societies that had better ideas on how to help creative people manage the emotional risk of creativity Creativity did not come from human beings but from a divine spirit that they called "Deamons" Ancient Grece Renaissance They believed that creativity was a divine attendant spirit that literally lived in the walls of an artist studio. And it would come out and assist the artist with their work and they would help shape the outcome. Ancient Rome The ancient artist was protected from example narcissism. If your work was brilliant you couldn't take all the credit for it because everyone knew you had a genius who helped you. And if it was bad, it wasn't entirely your fault, your genius was lame. Psychological construct to protect This is how people thought about creativity in the west for a really long time. Everything changed. They put the human being at the center of the universe, Above all Gods and mysteries, there was no more room for mystical creatures.
This was the beginning of rational humanism. People started to believe creativity came completely from the self individual.
It was the first time in history that people were referring to an artist being a genius instead of having one. This was a HUGE error. It was making a person believe that they were the essence of creativity and that is too much responsibility for one small fragile human psyche.
It warps and distorts egos and creates high expectations about performance. And it`s that pressure that has been killing off our artist for the last 500 years. What can we do now? Can we go back to an ancient understanding about the relationship between humans and creativity?
Probably not, we can`t just erase 500 years of humanistic thought. Plus people would raise suspicions about mystical creatures. But why not think about it this way?
Because it makes sense, in terms of explaining the creative process, a process that does not always behave rationally. The poet Ruth Stone has a very interesting way of describing how her work came to her. she would be out working in the fields and she could feel and hear a poem coming to her like a ''thunderous train of air''. The poem would be chasing her and she had to get to a pencil and paper fast enough so that when it thundered through her she could collect it on the page.
Other times she wouldn't be fast enough and the poem would barrel through her and continue across the landscape in search of another poet. If you're having trouble writing Take the genius, where it was creating nothing but trouble, and release it back where it came from.
The creative process doesn't have to be an internalized tormented thing. It could be this peculiar, wondrous, bizarre collaboration. What are you to do with the rest of your life if your greatest success is behind you? It's hard. One of the most painful reconciliations to make in a creative life. But it doesn't have to be hard. If you believe that the most extraordinary aspect of your being didn't come from you, but that they were on loan to you from some exterior being for a small portion of your life. If we start to think about it this way it starts to change everything Don't be afraid, just do your job and keep showing up for your job. Thank you!
