Beginning of the novel. Pip meets Mr Jaggers As an infant, Philip Pirrip was unable to pronounce either his first name or his last. doing his best, he called himself “Pip," and the name stuck in his head. Now Pip, a young boy, is an orphan living in his sister’s house in the marsh country in southeast England.

One evening, Pip sits in the isolated village churchyard, staring at his parents’ tombstones. Suddenly, a growling, horrific man, dressed in rags, chains hanging from his legs, jumped out from nowhere and seized pip. This man was the convict. This escaped convict questions pip and harshly demands pip to bring him food, and a file in which he can saw away at his leg iron with.

Pip, frightened by the convict, rushes home, and ends up stashing food in his clothes, to take to the convict. Over breakfast the next morning, Pumblechook talks to Pip on multiplication problems. At ten, he is taken to Miss Havisham’s manor house, Satis House. The gate is locked, and a small, very beautiful girl comes to open it (This being Estella). She is rude to Pumblechook and sends him away when she takes Pip inside. She leads him through the dark mansion to Miss Havisham’s candlelit room, where the skeletal old woman waits by her mirror, wearing a faded wedding dress, surrounded by clocks stopped at twenty minutes to nine.

The first sight of Miss Havisham frightened and left pip in shock. Meeting Miss Havisham. This is when we find that a strange man attacks mrs Joe at night time. She was beaten and the results of the attack left her injured badly being unable to talk. Later in the novel we find out that the man who attacked her was orlick Orlick and Mrs Joe Miss havishams lawyer, mr Jaggers, a lawyer from the streets of london enters the forge and confronts pip. He tells pip that he has a secret benefactor who is paying for his trip to london to become a gentleman as he wanted to do. Pip is not allowed to know who his benefactor is, but he is convinced that it is ofcourse miss havisham, therefor meaning that miss havisham wishes for Pip to marry Estella when he has become a gentleman. In the house with Pip's sister
and mr Gargery, Joe.
Later on, miss havisham asks pip to bring joe to her house on his next visit, as he has spoken alot about him. Joe comes and she pays for pip to become Joes apprentice at his forge. But pip wanted to better himself instead and become a gentleman in the streets of london. Pip talks to Joe and Biddy about his gentlemanship After pip decides that he truly wants to better himself and build his identity that he never knew, he speaks to both Joe and biddy about his decisions to persue that. This is when he finds that biddy had fallen for him, and pip wishes he could have done the same back. This is when biddys love for pip becomes clear. Pip ages from a child, he continues to visit
miss havisham, and later gains the idea that he wants to better himself.
