Definition - What does Straight-Through Cable mean?
A straight-through cable is a type of twisted pair cable that is used in local area networks to connect a computer to a network hub such as a router. This type of cable is also sometimes called a patch cable and is an alternative to wireless connections where one or more computers access a router through a wireless signal.
A crossover cable is a type of twisted pair copper wire cable for LANs (local area network) in which the wires on the cable are crossed over so that the receive signal pins on the RJ-45 connector on one end are connected to the transmit signal pins on the RJ-45 connector on the other end.
Network cable that connects a dumb terminal or computer to a network switch or router console port. Often the rollover cable is flat or yellow to help prevent any confusion between other Cat5 network cables.
Straight-through cables are primarily used for connecting unlike devices.
All wire pairs are in the same order on each end of the cable.
A straight-through cable is typically used in the following situations:
* 1. Connecting a router to a hub
* 2. Connecting a computer to a swtich
* 3. Connecting a LAN port to a switch, hub, or computer
Crossover cables are very similar to straight-through cables, except that they have pairs of wires that crisscross. This allows for two devices to communicate at the same time. Unlike straight-through cables, we use crossover cables to connect like devices.
