The Lunar Cycle The lunar cycle is the cycle of moons around the earth. It rotates in a counter clockwise rotation into the next phase. New Moon-The side of the moon that is facing the Earth is not lit up by the sun. This is the first phase. Waxing Cresent- a small part of the moon (less than 1/2 ) is lit up at this point. This is the second phase First Quarter- one half of the moon is lit up. This is the third phase Waxing Gibbous- At this time more than half of the moon is lit up. This is the fourth phase. Full Moon- The entire moon is lit up. This is the fifth moon phase. Waning Gibbous- More than half of the moon is lit up. This is the sixth phase. Third Quarter- Half of the moon is lit up. This is the sixth phase. Waning Cresent- Less than half of the moon is lit up. This is the eighth phase Earth Sun
