Teenagers often struggle to define themselves and their place in the world. They may choose to associate with a certain group because its members share similar beliefs, attitudes or interests.
1960s Flashback: Into the World of The Outsiders
Gangs in the 1960s were different than the gangs of today. When gangs like the Latin Kings, Surenos, Nutenos, Crips, and Bloods first began back in the 1960s, they were not the criminal organizations that they are now. They had a brotherhood and shared a common Identity that consisted of a group of working men with common Ideals. The majority of the gangs in the 1960s began in California, except for the Latin Kings, who started in Chicago.
