In this case, John Marshall pointed out the fact that the federal government had the implied power to create a national bank. By asserting this federal supremacy, Marshall was able to protect the commercial and industrial interests that favored a national bank. As far as nationalism goes, the federal supremacy over the states helps to bring the United States together as a whole, rather than breaking into many, over powerful sections. Like in the case of McCulloch v. Maryland, Marshall was able to establish a sense of federal supremacy. In this case, however, it is established that the federal government has broad control over interstate commerce. With the federal government in control rather than the states, nationalism is created and sectionalism is abolished. Though it was popular for a short time, this doctrine backfired when citizens realized they would much rather deal with domestic issues, rather than risking their independence and fellow American citizens in protecting foreign countries with theirs. This shows their interest in nationalism and fighting for their own country, not some foreign one. Gibbons v. Ogden Like in the case of McColloch v. Maryland, Marshall, again, established a sense of federal supremacy over the states. However, in this case, he established the federal government's broad control of interstate commerce. These cases continue to place the federal government in full control, which allows the United States of America to come together in nationalism, rather than have each state be over powerful and separated from each other, creating sectionalism. Henry Clay's American System created a self-sufficient, interdependent country. Let me show you how. Clay's American system consisted of the following parts:
1) protective tariffs
2) a national bank
3) internal improvements The tariffs were designed to promote American manufacturing and raise revenue in order to build a national transportation system. This transportation system would allow citizens from the North, South, East, and West to get together easier and quicker, promoting nationalism. The revenue and manufacturing would make American more self-reliant; they would buy from Europe less and less with every penny of revenue they earned. The bank would keep this American System running smoothy by providing a national currency. This way, self-sufficiency would be achieved at a faster pace. All in all, the tariffs would benefit the east, for the national transportation system could get them to other regions faster and easier than ever before, the internal improvements would promote growth in the South and the West, and the bank would help all regions economically and allow this system to work effectively to create a country that could rely on themselves, not foreign countries. The Hudson River School Rocky Mountain School Genre Artists Monticello University of Virginia This painting, by Thomas Cole, illustrates the crumbling of an empire. In this case, the empire would be Britain, crumbling before the United States. This illustrates nationalism because it shows the British that America will bring them down eventually if they do not release their hold on them. All in all, it is Cole's warning to the British to step down and let them have their independence. In this Hudson River School painting, the artist combines nature with manufacturing, insisting it is possible to obtain both.It also illustrates the future of a national transportation system, which would bring the United States together in nationalism. This Thomas Moran work illustrates the beauty of America, and shows British that they are just as beautiful as any other country; they may not be fully developed, but they are gorgeous through both nature and within themselves. This work, by Albert Bierstadt, illustrates Lewis and Clark's westward movement on the Oregon trail. Nationalism is portrayed in this painting through the idea of expanding westward and becoming an ever greater nation. Also, keeping the Louisiana Purchase in mind, this painting also portrays indepence, for this westward movement removed the Spanish from the New Orleans port, providing America with more freedom than ever before. This John Quidor painting illustrates Americans fighting for their rights against the Britain. Although they may be different, this painting shows that the mutual hate of the majority of America brought them together nationally, and they were more than willing to work together and fight for their freedom. In this work of art by William Sydney Mount, five men, both black and white, are relaxing beneath a tree on the countryside. This illustrates nationalism because Mount is showing that, in America, citizens of all races are willing to interact and work with each other. Although this may not be entirely true for all parts of America at that time, this painting definitely has the power to convince Britain that this is how life works in America. Describing it his "essay of architecture," Jefferson's goal in designing his home of Monticello was to use Roman and Greek ideals, rather than those of British. He built Monticello as a statement to both the British and his country; America did not need British architecture to have beautiful buildings. Similar to his designing and building of Monticello, Jefferson wanted to create more than one building using these new Greek and Roman styles of architecture. He expanded these ideas through the making of the buildings of the University of Virginia, once again proving to his country that they did not need British architecture for their buildings to look phenomenal. The Theme: Life must be observed closely and one must be able to think about themselves
Because Holmes is a writer of nationalism, this work could aslo be interpreted as a way for people to view their lives and ask themself two questions: 1) am I free or aren't I? and 2) if not, how can I become free? Henry Wadsworth Longfellow One of his works: The Song of Hiawatha
The Theme: Bringing peace and enlightenment to the people
This relates to the theme of nationalism because, like the character in this poem, Jefferson devoted his presidency and much of his life to bringing just that into America. Longfellow took this idea of this peaceful state and transformed it into a magical, enchanting work of literature. Nathaniel Hawthorne

The Theme: The Puritan world was judgemental and unjust
Although not directly about nationalism, Hawthorne describes these Puritans in a way that allows readers to judge them the same way they judged Hester Prynne. However, because the Puritans are so judgemental about seemingly innocent activities, it shows that they will not stand for British improsonment; their stamina to make things right prove them to be the future creators of nationalism. This treaty characterized America as strong, yet peaceful. With this in mine, other nations began to accept that America was becoming a powerful nation. This united them in nationalism. This case, which pinned public properties against private ones, helped to establish the creation of the American business corporation. This promoted nationalism because it allowed more means of business to be opened, thus creating shopping markets people could use nationwide.
