Rhode Island is the smallest state in the United States. It has about 1,052567 people and is about 1,245 square miles. Rhode Island's capital is Providence. This is basic information many people know of but who established it? Why was it founded? What was their goal? How did they make a living? When was it established? What was their economy based on?
A minister named Roger Williams established Rhode
Roger Williams didn't agree with Puritans so he founded the first Baptist Church. He also didn't like the idea of taking Native American lands of the colonists. For this reason they forced him to leave Massachusetts. That is when he founded Rhode Island in the south from Massachusetts.
The economy in Rhode Island concentrated in ship building, making alcoholic beverages, fishing, whale products, timber products, furs, and maple syrup.
The life in Rhode Island was determined by religion, wealth, and status. The people of lower class were manual workers, servants, apprentices, sailors, and men who traded. They could not vote or hold public office just like identured servants or slaves and they couldn't read or write. The people from middle class had businesses, had proffesions, or were men who traded, or they had stores. They could vote but not many could hold office. The Upper class consisted of wealthy and wealthy educated minors. They could vote and hold public office.
Rhode Island's official state name is the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.
