satirical street art

subversive graffiti
irony & sarcasm

When I was eighteen I spent one night trying to paint "LATE AGAIN" in big silver bubble letters on the side of a passenger train. British transport police showed up and I got ripped to shreds running away through a thorny bush. The rest of my mates made it to the car and disappeared so I spent over an hour hidden under a dumper truck with engine oil leaking all over me. As I lay there listening to the cops on the tracks I realised I had to cut my painting time in half or give up altogether. I was staring straight up at the stenciled plate on the bottom of a fuel tank when I realised I could just copy that style and make each letter three feet high.
"There's an elephant in the room... 20 billion people live below the poverty line."
"I have a fantasy that all the little powerless losers will gang up together. That all the vermin will get some good equipment and then the underground will go overground and tear this city apart."

"I mostly support projects working to restore sight and prevent eye disease. Or as I like to call it, 'expanding the market.'"

Banksy's Response
The money that my work fetches these days makes me a bit uncomfortable, but that's an easy problem to solve — you just stop [whining] and give it all away. I don't think it's possible to make art about world poverty and then trouser all the cash, that's an irony too far, even for me.
"Better Out Than In"

The Banksy Effect
term coined by CNN journalist Max Foster

Banksy's rise to fame has led to a sudden worldwide craze for other street art

"While Shepard Fairey created the movement, Banksy created the market."
