WHERE DID AMPHIBIANS COME FROM?
Amphibians evolved from lobe-finned fish 360 million years ago, during the Devonian Period
Lobe-finned fish had bony, strong fins which helped them crawl on the ocean floor, these later evolved into limbs.
They also developed lungs so they could breathe when the swamps they lived in were low in oxygen
They moved to land where there were less predators and more food sources
CHARACTERISTICS OF AMPHIBIANS
All Amphibians are
Vertebrates
; They have a backbone
They are also
Cold Blooded
; They cannot control their own body temperature
Amphibians are
Tetrapods
or four-limbed
They are animals with the ability to
inhabit both aquatic and terrestrial environments
Their
skin is permeable
; molecules and gases can pass through it
They have
gills
for at least a part of their life
Most amphibians go through

metamorphosis
Carnivorous
for all or part of their life

The bones of amphibians are lightweight and hallow.
In frogs and toads, the muscles and skeleton are strong to support the head and body which takes up most of the the bodies weight.
Most amphibians have 4 digits on their fore feet, and 5 on their hind feet.
Caecilians do not have limbs, therefore they use a hydrostatic skeleton to stiffen their bodies and drive their heads forward to dig.
WHAT ARE AMPHIBIANS?
CHORDATES are organisms that have:
a notochord; rod of cells which support the body
a dorsal nerve cord with an enlarged anterior end (Cephalization)
tail projecting beyond (posterior to) the anus
pharyngeal pouches; pouches that develop on the endodermal side at the embryo stage
an endostyle; grooves on the sides of the pharynx which aid in digestion

Amphibians are a class of animals that are adapted to living on land and water
The word amphibian comes from the greek word amphibios which means both lives or double life.
Excretory System
Kidneys in an amphibian will take waste out of their blood stream
Urine tubes transport urine to the cloaca
Urine will either be passed out through the cloaca or it will be stored temporally until the amphibian releases it

Organisms classified in Kingdom Animalia are:
Multicellular
Eukaryotic
Hetrotrophic
Order Anura has 88% of the amphibian species

Characteristics of Organisms in Order Anura:
Tail-less
Webbed Feet
Mostly

Carnivorous
Most move by leaping
Lose gills before adult stage
Prey and Ingestion Methods
Amphibian Digestive System
Although amphibians are Carnivores,with a few exceptions, frog larvae are herbivores. Only when they grow into adult frogs do they become predators.
Due to lack of teeth or other methods of catching prey, frogs evolved a long sticky tongue in order to catch their prey.

Digestive Track
The amphibian digestive track starts with the mouth, where food enters the esophagus. The food is then pushed into the stomach, where the food is partially broken down. Food enters the small and large intestines where nutrients are absorbed, the waste produced then enters the cloaca and exits the body.

Reproductive System
Male frogs and toads fertilize the female's eggs by means of external fertilization, while the male embraces the female.
Male salamanders deposit a spermatophore (packet of sperm) onto the ground, where a female will then pull it into her cloaca for internal fertilization.
Caecilians perform internal fertilization.

Amphibians can breathe using 3 different structures:
1. Gills
2. Lungs
3. Skin

Circulatory System
They have a 3 Chambered heart which is used to transport oxygen directly to their bloodstream
Amphibians have membranes behind each of their eyes, called tympanic membranes. These tympanic membranes transmit sound waves to the amphibians inner ear. This allows them to detect sounds in water and air.

have long cylindrical bodies
Creatures in this order:
Amphibians exist on all continents except Antarctica.
They live everywhere, in rainforests, rivers, streams, deserts, etc.
The presence of amphibians in an ecosystem proves it is healthy.
