Selena Quintanilla-Perez Selena Quintanilla was born on April 16, 1971 in Lake Jackson, Texas. Selena's Home & Background Selena's Contributions Selena's Tragic End Even though she had all this money and her own clothes line, she still liked to shop at Wal-Mart and Payless. Fun Facts!! Resides between the United States and Mexico Border. Nuevo Leon; Mexico Selena's Grandfather (Abraham Quintanilla, Sr.) was from Nuevo Leon, Mexico, then migrated to Texas. Selena Marcella Abraham Suzette Selena : The Tejano Queen Selena first started singing at 8 years old with her brother and sister, they were called "Selena y los dinos." By the late '80s the band gained popularity and in 1986 she won female vocalist of the year. She made donations to the D.A.R.E. program and was a spokesperson for them. Her community services were honored on April 8, 1994 when the mayor claimed it to be "Selena Quintanilla Day." She had even advocated for the Boys and Girls Club. In 1994 she gave a free concert to students who had improved their grades, and included a $2,500 donation to the school system. After she was murdered, then Governor of Texas George W. Bush claimed her birthday April 16 "Selena's Day." She was known as the "Mexican Madonna" because of her clothes (which she designed herself) and the way she danced. When her English soundtrack came out it debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200. She was the first Hispanic woman to accomplish this. On March 31, 1995 Selena was going to meet with her soon to be ex-fan club president,Yolanda Saldivar, at the Days Inn Hotel. After firing Yolanda from the club Selena turned around to walk out when she pulled a gun out, then shot Selena. After being shot she ran to the lobby screaming for help telling the receptionist who shot her. She then laid down in her own blood and bled to death. Yolanda Salvidar is now residing in prison for the rest of her life. Famous for adventure sports such as rock climbing. Third most industrialized state in Mexico. It also ranks highest above all Latin American places in the Human Development index.
