OBJECTIVE
HANDLING OF CHEMICALS
DISPENSING SOLIDS
WHEN DISPENSING SOLID CHEMICALS FROM REAGENT BOTTLES, ALWAYS REMOVE SMALL QUANTITIES USING A SPATULA AND PLACE THE CHEMICAL ON A GLAZED PAPER. NEVER USE FILTER PAPER!
PRECIPITATION IS THE CREATION OF A SOLID IN A SOLUTION OR INSIDE ANOTHER SOLID DURING A CHEMICAL REACTION
THE SEPARATION OF THE SOLID FROM THE LIQUID MIXTURE OFTEN OCCURS WHEN CHEMICALS ARE MIXED.
TO PREPARE A PRECIPITATE IN A TEST TUBE , ONE SOLUTION IS USUALLY ADDED DROPWISE AND THEN MIXED THOROUGHLY
PRECIPITATION
WHEN USING A PIPET TO DISPENSE LIQUIDS, ALWAYS USE A PIPET BULB TO SUCK UP THE LIQUID
NEVER INSERT YOUR OWN DROPPER INTO A REAGENT BOTTLE OR THE DROPPER FROM A REAGENT BOTTLE INTO YOUR OWN TEST TUBE OR SOLUTION
DISPENSING LIQUIDS
COMMON LABORATORY OPERATIONS
PLACE THE WIRE GAUZE ON THE TRIPOD BEFORE HEATING A LIQUID IN A BEAKER, FLASK OR EVAPORATING DISH
PLACE THE LIGHTED BURNER UNDER THE STAND AND WATCH CONSTANTLY AS THE LIQUID IS BROUGHT TO THE BOILING POINT
ADJUST THE FLAME SO THAT THE LIQUID BOILS SLOWLY
HEATING LIQUIDS
HEATING LIQUIDS (USING TEST TUBE)
MAKE SURE THAT THE LIQUID SAMPLE INSIDE THE TEST TUBE IS NOT MORE THAN HALF FULL
GRASP THE TUBE WITH A TEST TUBE HOLDER
TILT THE TUBE AT AN ANGLE OF 45 DEGREES AND PLACE IT ON THE FLAME OF THE BUNSEN BURNER
BE SURE THAT THE MOUTH OF THE TUBE IS NEITHER POINTED TOWARDS YOU NOR THE PERSON WORKING NEXT TO YOU

Filtration is commonly the mechanical or physical operation which is used for the separation of solids from fluids by interposing a medium through which only the fluid can pass (filter paper). The fluid that passes through is called the filtrate.
