The bottleneck limit the overall performance including productivity and represent the resources a designer must invest to obtain significant improvements.


Arena software is used as one of the approach to stimulate production line performance.


The most important resources affecting the performance of a production line is a bottlenecks.


The possible tool and method is determined in order to recognize the problems and do the improvement suggestion.

The improvement activities are important at the production line in every industry in order to survive the industry competition.

Value stream is a collection of all actions VA as well as NVA that are required to bring a product or a group of products that use the same resources through the main flow, from raw material until receive to the customer. (Hines and Rich,1997)

To compare result such as cycle time/lead time, throughput, utilization of resources, bottleneck, queuing and work in process before and after the implementation of improvement by develop an effective and reliable model by using Arena software.
To propose an improvement suggestions by using line balancing technique as a tool
Assembly Line Balancing, or simply Line Balancing (LB), is the problem of assigning operation to workstation along an assembly line, in such a way that assignment is optimal in some sense. (Falkenauer, 2000)
Line balancing is an effective tool to improve the throughput of assembly line while reducing non value-added activities, cycle time.

Arena software (Rockwell) provides an excellent tool in order to use the resources via the Resource, Queue, Set and Schedule modules in the Basic Process panel and the Advanced Set module in the Advanced Process panel

To stimulate an effective and reliable model by taking Arena simulation software towards recognition of the improvement actions in production line.


This study will focus on the related facilities/workstation, method, process and human factors/error involves in the production flow for selected part/product and attention is given only for discrete part flow (produce individual part/product that easily distinguishable)
The possible method used in this study is line balancing technique and visual stream mapping (VSM) as a tool for improvement activities.

VSM as the process of visually mapping the flow of information and materials as they are and preparing a future state map with better methods and performance. (Jones and Womack, 2000)

The Arena template is the core collection of more than 60 modules provided as part of the general Arena system
To determine the bottleneck in the production line by using Arena software.
