How Does Vocabulary in Context Work?
Writers leave context
clues as they write.
It is the reader's job to hunt them down!
4 Clue Types
Rewording the word

Giving details about the word
REWORDING
Rewording is when the the word is given in another way.

This is usually easier to understand.
Resentment, a feeling of bitterness and anger, is often felt by people who are passed over for promotions.

Synonym context clues are a word words that mean almost the same as the one that the author does not expect us to know.

An antonym context clue is when a word with opposite meaning provides the hint about the unknown word.
ANTONYM
Rosa appeared to be a very moral and upstanding young lady, but those who knew her, knew that she was iniquitous.
EXAMPLE
What is the word in the sentence that clues you in to the presence of an antonym?
The word BUT tells us that the two parts of the sentence represent opposite points of view about Rosa
The two opposite points of view are:
1. That Rosa is moral and upstanding.
2. That she is iniquitous.
Therefore INIQUITOUS must mean...
IMMORAL and EVIL!
David was very outgoing as opposed to his coy sister.

Details are context clues when they give us explanations or examples as hints about the unknown word.

Details can be:
examples of the unknown word
tell why the unknown word has taken place
explain how the word relates to other statements
EXAMPLE
My grandfather was ECSTATIC when Christian decided to attend his ALMA MATER for college.

There are special words in this sentence that hint at the presence of a detail.
1. Ecstatic describes a feeling.
2. College shows a location.
