by: Stephanie Campana Diabetes What is Diabetes and what are the different types? How does Diabetes effect people? Pedigree Chart on Diabetes Diabetes is a disorder of the metabolism causing excessive thirst and the production of large amounts of urine. Type 1 Diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults. The most serious problem is hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, which can cause disorientation. If blood sugar dips severely low, coma and death can occur. Type 1 diabetes is a disorder of the immune system that makes it difficult for the body to produce insulin. Without insulin, the body cannot convert sugar from food into needed nutrients for cells. If there is too much sugar that builds up in the blood stream and may eventually cause severe damage to organs and premature death. In type 2 diabetes, either the body does not produce enough insulin or the cells ignore the insulin. Insulin is necessary for the body to be able to use glucose for energy. When you eat food, the body breaks down all of the sugars and starches into glucose, which is the basic fuel for the cells in the body. Insulin takes the sugar from the blood into the cells. When glucose builds up in the blood instead of going into cells, it can lead to diabetes complications. Type 2 diabetes can be easy to ignore. But diabetes affects many major organs, including your heart, blood vessels, nerves, eyes and kidneys. fact) People with Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes can live long healthy lives with he proper diet, exercise, and medicine such as insulin.
