Global Perspectives: The Overview Effect
Transcript of Global Perspectives: The Overview Effect
The Overview Effect
How has technology affected our modern view of the world?
With the help of technology could the ‘Overview Effect’ be the next step in providing mankind with a more cosmopolitan and unified global perspective?
Nations are separated and divided by geographic & political boundaries
we see their country & our continent...
WHY DO WE NOT SEE
"With each generation the amount of environmental degradation increases, but each generation tends to take that degraded condition as the non-degraded condition... as the normal experience." (Khan, 2011)
'ENVIRONMENTAL GENERATIONAL AMNESIA'
“Humanity must rise above the earth, to the top of the atmosphere and beyond. For only then will we understand the world in which we live.”
"The view of the Earth from the Moon fascinated me—a small disk, 240,000 miles away. It was hard to think that that little thing held so many problems, so many frustrations. Raging nationalistic interests, famines, wars, pestilence don't show from that distance."
Frank Borman, Apollo 8 (1969)
Juliette Sharp & Leah Foster
“the desire to see an image of the entire world focused before us, clear, self-contained, comprehensible and masterable.” (Whitfield, 1994)
“This experience needs to be made available for all people. It is also crucial to bring this experience to leaders around the world, regardless of whether they are political, corporate or academic leaders. This experience will benefit everybody." (Newberg, 2009)
Virgin Galactic hope to start sending their first customers to suborbital space from the U.S. by the end of 2014... if you have a spare $250 000 lying around you might just come home with a new and improved global perspective.
For those who can't afford the trip there is always 'Urthecast'. While still in it's early development it will provide a 24hr live stream of the earth from the International Space Station.
'None of us living today has experienced certain forms of interaction with nature that were common even one or two hundred years ago.' (Kahn, 2011)
The degradation of the natural world means the degradation of a connection to our planet.
Technology seems to provide a substitute, a new form of connection.
Could we use these new digital technologies to reconnect with our natural world?
Could they provide us with a means to a new and improved world perspective?
Why is it that computer backgrounds are
primarily high definition photographs of
Could we combine the interaction between our screens and our planet?
Our perceptions of the world are often shaped by the way the world is presented to us visually. Technology plays a key role in our understanding of the 'Overview Effect' - in it's discovery, in it's representation and in it's education.
The 'Overview Effect' provides us with a new global perspective, shaped by a new visual recognition and understanding of our planet.
If the technology is used correctly, and this understanding is educated on a global scale - there is hope of instilling an improved cosmopolitan perspective.
What about Google Earth?
If we saw the world visually presented to us as
a 'tiny-fragile ball of life' every time we connected with our screens, would it begin to change our perspective?

Astronauts have reported a cognitive shift in awareness when seeing the reality of earth in space. For those who experience the ‘Overview Effect’ the need to create a planetary society with a focus to protect this ‘pale blue dot’ becomes both obvious and imperative...
