The Catcher in the Rye: Loneliness and Depression
Transcript of The Catcher in the Rye: Loneliness and Depression
I choose the topic, loneliness and depression, because I not only felt as if it was an important topic in the book, but an important part in everybody's life especially teens and people in their adolescence. The definition of depression is feelings of severe despondency and dejection. Despondency meaning a state of low spirits caused by loss hope or courage, and dejection meaning low spirits. Everybody once in life at least once feel lonely and in some way depressed, and throughout the whole book a lot of Holden's problems were because he was feeling lonely and depressed in a way. I also believe that the definition of despondency fits him very well. He lost hope and courage as no one would listen to him and once he was kicked out of school. Throughout the book Holden shows us how being a kid in his time feels and being lonely feels. I also picked this topic because it is one that the modern teenager can connect to.
Topic Paragraphs cont.
There is no feeling teenagers feel more than loneliness. Being a teenager, I know I have felt lonely at many times in my life, and can see when others are experiencing it. Every teenager feels it whether they have one friend or one hundred friends, and this goes for adults too. When you go out and try to be heard and listened to, and nobody listens to you, than you start feeling lonely which leads to feeling depressed because you start to lose all your courage and start feeling alone and that no one will listen to you. I think that everyone can connect to this in some way. Although sevre depression is a very serious problem, and people still suffer through that today, but everybody goes through depression. Maybe not as sevre as others, but they still go through a slightly less case of it. It is very clear that people can still relate to this even in the modern time.
Topic Paragraph Cont.
In the book Holden shows that he is lonely and depressed. All throughout it he talks about this. A quote where he shows this is, ¨When I finally got down off the radiator and went out to the hat-check room, I was crying and all. I don't know why, but I was. I guess it was because I was feeling so damn depressed and lonesome.¨ (20.37) This shows how being lonely and depressed can make you feel. He was crying and he drew the conclusion that the reason for this was because he was lonely and feeling depressed. It shows that being lonely and depressed is a big problem and can make you feel like you just want to cry, and most of all be heard which is what Holden wanted. And this could also happen to modern day teenager and people. They could feel this way because it is still so easy to feel lonely and depressed.
Modern Day Representation
For the modern day representation, I chose a song by Childish Gambino. The songs title is Be Alone and I feel like in represents what Holden is going through very well. Although because it is a song and the artist tends to not stay on one topic, there are many parts in the song that I feel connects to Holden in many ways. It also obviously talks about being alone and being lonely and depressed. In the song, it says ¨It seems the more I try to connect with the world, I am feeling more alone than I ever have felt before.¨ I think this relates to Holden because he also felt more lonely as he tried to connect with people, like the prostitute. Holden also says, ¨I'm sorry I told so many people about it. About all I know is, I sort of miss everybody I told about. Even old Stradlater and Ackley, for instance. I think I even miss that goddam Maurice. It's funny. Don't ever tell anybody anything. If you do, you start missing everybody.¨ (26.3) Which shows that you will feel alone as you try to start connecting with people, which is why he tried not to connect and talk to people especially about his feelings and life. The song also talks about feeling misunderstood and because of that not being able to talk to people. That is also how Holden feels throughout the book. This is also how people who are lonely and depressed feel.
Powtoon on Depression and Loneliness
For my creative piece on my topic, I created a Powtoon. The Powtoon held 5 facts in it relating depression and loneliness. I choose the facts that could relate to Holden, but could also relate to modern day people and teenagers. The topic is demonstrated because I talked about many things about lonlieness and depression in it. Some things that cause it, some things that result in it, and just other facts that I found interesting. The Powtoon also has animations of depressed and lonely people that I felt tied into the topic well. It also shows that they are both very serious issues and that Holden must have been going through a lot in his journey back home after getting kicked out of school.
